Copper Hills Elementary has a new Family Center. They are in the process of a rotating setting-u- p babysitting service to benefit their parent volunteers. Bunny McCoun in Student Services, Martin Bates in Human Resources, and the County Sheriffs office are getting the volunteers fingerprinted for background checks. Then they will be setting up a rotating schedule that will keep two screened volunteers in the Family Center to babysit for those parents in the community who come to the school to volunteer, but need to bring little ones with them! Principal Joey Foote anticipates that this program will double their volunteer support. states that they are providing teacher teams (by grade level) one hour per week for strategic planning around the goals of the Urban Learning Center model. This is accomplish by hiring five substitutes from the community to commit their Thursdays to the school. The subs come in and characconduct a ter or safety lesson with each grade level (same lesson taught school-wid- e one hour at a time). enables the teachers each grade level to meet together for that hour to address the needs of specific students in their grade level. At the same time, all students in the school are getting a common lesson that the faculty can draw from as they work with student behavior This is a wonderful way to sustain the changes they are trying to implement with the Urban Learning Center reforms. And, the total cost will be under $1 8,000 for the entire year! He one-ho- ur This kinds of professional development needed to address the needs of our students.
