"Each year we try to select someone who had been important to Magna affairs," said Parade Chairman Karl Petersen. "When we realized how important LeRee has been in the history of Magna we chose to honor her." Pehrson was born in Hunter and graduated from Cyprus High School in 1939. Out of 200 local students that were nominated only 40 were eventually chosen for the group. "I'm flattered that I was able to do something like this at 14," Kringlie said. "I never thought I would be able to visit another country until I was older, and 1 never expected to be an ambassador." .The mission of People to People is to promote world peace by understanding differ- ent cultures and encouraging younger people to be more open minded about other cultures. .a! in on Kringlie left for June 15 and returned to M. na on July 4. Her delegation con- sisted of 18 Junior High School students from Utah, 21 students from Wisconsin and one student from Montana. "Our group made a good: L COPY Kringlie said. "Having the chance to interact with the regular people who live there was a good experience because they are the ones who form opinions about us if they have a good opinion then they will spread it around to other people in Australia." During her three-wee- k visit down under, Kringlie was able to have a short home-sta- y visit where she lived for several days with an Australian family and see how families live and interact with each other. She spent time on an Australian ranch and visited famous sights including the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House and Fort Douglas. Through the experience, Kringlie said she learned that there was more to the Australian culture than she realized from social studies classes at school. "I learned a lot abou their culture and the people by watching them," Kringlie said. '1 expected that they would be more different than us but our cultures are very much the same. They are very curious and ask a lot of questions and weren't offended by us if we asked a lot of questions."
