Increased traffic through Magna and congestion between 7200 West and 8400 West prompted UDOT to the need for slower speeds in that 3500 South corridor. After conducting a traffic study of the area we have recommended the speed be lowered to 40 miles per hour, said Mike Seely, region traffic engineer for UDOT. In March UDOT conducted a survey to evaluate the feasibility of placing a signal light at the intersection of 3500 South and Centennial Road. At this time traffic counts do not warrant a traffic signal at that location at this time, Seely said. The study was requested by the Area Council and local residents that continue to be frustrated with long waits to enter or exit Centennial Road. There will be a school cross- ing in that area, Seely said. After school begin we can come the site again to out and determine if a signal is necessary. Seely said that criteria for the study of a new traffic signal included the number of vehicles that traveled on that section of 3500 South, the number of vehicles turning onto or out of Centennial Road, the number of pedestrians, accident history and waiting time to cross. The basis for installing a signal light is on current usage, Seely said. When school starts and there is an increase of traffic we can come out and study it again. Seely said that UDOT would not signalize an intersection based on speculation of usage.
