Salt Lake Community College students the students invited to only two-year participate currently rank third out of 150 schools nationwide. More impressive, said Northwestern Mutual's College Unit Director Jeff Lewis, is that the rank is determined by individual production as well as team production and SLCC only has three team members compared to other schools 15 to 30 student members. "SLCC students are outgoing. and quick to learn and apply their skills, Lewis said, noting that student Ben Jones is ranked sixth nationwide individually. Northwestern Mutuals financial internship offers students actual business experience, networking with people in the busi- ness community, flexible work schedules, state licensing school and an unlimited income potential. It has been ranked one of the top 10 internship programs in the United States for the past seven years by Princeton Reviews yearly publication, Americas Top Internships, Lewis said. "Were investing our time and effort in young people to help them be successful in their lives now and in the future. About one-thir- d of our former interns contract with Northwestern Mutual upon graduation and become some of the higher paid financial representatives in our company, Lewis said. Jones learned about the internship when Lewis came as a guest speaker to his SLCC investment class and started challenging Lewis answers regarding mutual funds and tax strategies. Merrill, who spearheaded the visits last year, said it also helps first graders to interact with older children, and allows eighth graders to act as role models. "It amazes my students that such a small amount of effort on the first graders, Merrill said. West Lakes life skills class is a two-wee- k addition to the semester long Family Consumer Science class. Merrills students visited Hillsdale one hour a week for two weeks. But the benefits, Merrill said, last longer than two weeks. Merrills students interviewed and photographed first graders, and then wrote stories using the first graders as main characters. Afterward they shared their stories with the first graders. They also played math games and read books to them, and participated in language arts and other activities and Jones finance and economics professor, Marlon Andrus, struck a cord and the opportunity for an internship was extended to Jones in November 1999. Jones, of Sandy, became SLCCs first student in the internship program that has extended to 16,000 students since 1967. Utah students from Brigham Young University, Weber State University, Westminster College and the University of Utah also participate in the financial representative internship. Ixwis said that each intern is giving a free aptitude test that measures the interns potential satisfaction with the entrepreneurial Andrus said SLCC students internship. In addition to the traditional art show, the "Taste of Kearns will add a Gee Whiz science and technology program to the event. The Kearns AP Chemistry class has a special program they are preparing to do. I understand they have many experiments they are excited to perform and that it will be a sight to see. The Reunion de Latino will host a presentation at Copper Hills Elementary on May 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. Dr. Ted Williams, principal of Magna Elementary will be leaving at the end of this year to become the principal of Moss Elementary.
