Show b The Magna Time West Valley News; Thursday, April 26, 2001 Scout raising funds for county fire The Salt Lake County Fire Department stand to benefit from the proposed Eagle Scout Project of Twelve-year-ol- Christopher d Confere. Confere, along with his Boy Scout troop members will begin a fundraiser campaign Friday to raise money to purchase at least one Thermal Imaging Camera to donate to the fire department I found out about the need the fire department had for a thermal imaging camera on television, Confere said. I called the fire department after that and talked about how I could help them raise the funds for one. That is when the project began. Each camera will cost approximately $25,000. Confere and his troop members will begin raising funds by going to residents and businesses in the community asking for donations. Donation jars will be set up at the Garfield Credit Union, Salt Lake Credit Union and Washington' ENERGY Mutual locations throughout Magna and West Valley. The camera can help the fire department find where people are inside a burning building so they can find them easier without risking lives, Confere said. It also helps them to see if there are sprinklers on in the building or if there are still hot spots after the fire is out. Confere will be raising funds through July 31. Anyone wanting to donate to Conferes Eagle Scout Project can send donations to Project Firefighter, P.O. Were really a plural raceway, because we have both an oval track and a drag strip, Birdsall said. Other motor sports hosted at RMR are Monster Truck races, Jet Car races. Figure Eight and Figure Eight Train races, nitrogen car, and motorcycle drag races. One of our most popular events is the Figure Eight Train races, Craft said. : A figure eight train is three cars hooked together like a train. The lead car has steering, while the end car, where the driver sits, has steering and breaks. The center car does nothing but ride. They race in a figure eight fashion, crisscrossing with other car trains. Sometimes they get smashed. want anyone to get hurt, but spectators like to see wrecks. Birdsall explained, Its just like with hockey; people want to see a fight at a hockey match. If crashes do happen, RMR has a proficient safety team to give the needed help. Craft said hed pit RMRs safety crew against any safety crew in the country. A child who falls and hits his head on the bleachers is taken care off just as cautiously as if someone were in a crash. Theyre very serious about their work, Craft said. "Were very proud of our safety crew. In 1999 one of RMRs racers died while being treated in a hospital from crash injuries, but rarely does this happen. No one has ever died on the race tracks, and hopefully no one ever will, Craft said. RMR also hosts a drag strip for youngsters, ages eight and above. Another popular event is the street legal races.
