The win improved the Pirates record to 0 overall and 0 in Region 5 action. Sonny Sudburys Pirates con2-- 5-- tinued its Cinderella season remaining undefeated while advancing to fourth in the Region Five rankings. The first quarter saw both squads play solid defense with Bountiful taking a early 3 lead. 7-- Cyprus points came on a Gary Nye field goal. In the second quarter, Cyprus scored 10 unanswered points on a Nye TD field goal and a 26-ya- rd 22-ya- rd 12-ya- rd strike from Casey Miller to Brandon Webb. 4 and Brandon Webb was too much for Bountiful. Cyprus Junior football team won its third straight game by defeating Hillcrest 28-- 6 on Sept. 16 in Midvale. The undefeated Junior Pirate team is tied for the Division II lead in 2000 Ute Conference action thus far. On its first possession early in the game, Cyprus Junior seized a quick lead. Dennis Montague swept around left end 25 yards for the first touchdown. Montague also punched in the 27-ya- rd 6. 6. Carl Pulou recovered a Hillcrest fumble in good field position to spark Cyprus again. The third quarter ended after extra point for a Pirate advantage. The Cyprus Junior defensive line, led by Fernando Gallegos, Joe Ellis, Eric Smith and Ryan 7-- 0 Allen, snuffed out the next Hillcrest drive on repeated attempts. Joe Ellis capped the defensive stand with a fumble recovery near the Hillcrest 30-ya- rd line. The Hillcrest Junior defense denied a Pirate first down in the next series, setting up good field position for the offense. Hillcrest wasted no time, launching a TD pass to trim the margin to one point near the first period break. After Dennis Montague and other Pirate defenders foiled the PAT run, the score stood 7-- 6 Cyprus. No scoring occurred in the second quarter, as both teams wrestled mightily. The first half ended with Cyprus Junior holding a narrow edge. The defensive struggle contin25-ya- rd one-poi- ued into nt mid-thir- d quarter. Cyprus defense denied Hijlcrest on four downs then quarterback Daryl Brown threw an interception. Cyprus again shut down the Hillcrest offense, highlighted by Mike Montoya rammed 1 1 yards for a first down at the Hillcrest line. 20-ya- rd Fullback Dennis Montague finished the early Cyprus scoring drive with two determined runs. Following fourth-quart- er excellent line blocking, Montague drove 1 1 yards for first down and goal to go at the Hillcrest nine-yar- d line. On the next play, left side line blocking opened the hole and Montague cashed in on a nine-yar- d touchdown run for a 20-- 6 lead. Mike Montoya capped the effort with a successful extrapoint run to put Cyprus Junior in a commanding 21-- 6 position.
