BLODGETT STAFF WRITER $ Roadwork on the 3100 South project in West Valley City is winding down as the orange barrels and caution signs are about to be removed. On July 1 work crews completed a mammoth paving job on the busy street that serves the city from the east and the west, and ties in with major north-sout- h highways. The forecasted tornado is part of the storyline for an episode of the television show Touched by an Angel, which will begin filming in the historic downtown next week. Unknown vandals have destroyed or stolen the plaques from the park, located east of the Magna Senior Citizens Center on Main Street. Those people left after only five months, Olsen said. So I said 'Lets go back and start over. We plan to be here for a long time and help out the community. The Olsens Bakery, located at 8963 West 2700 South, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For a limited time the bakery will give away a free loaf of bread with any purchase. Magnas Community Oriented Policing Sheriffs deputies have been alerted and are keeping a closer watch on thhe park. No suspects to the vandalism have been identified or arrested, Peterson said. The national recognition follows state recognition in volunteer service that Newton received from the State of Utah in 1999. I have been doing this all my life, Newton said. 1 dont feel like Im 83. Ive always been active and 1 want to still donate er fsjdn Newton holds her volunteor award my time somewhere. Newton grew up on a farm on 6400 West, where she still resides with her husband George Newton. Other family members live nearby. The couple have two children. Mary Jane Davis and Fred Newton. Five generations live on that street, Newton said. I went to Cypress High School and worked during my senior year for $3 a month so I could finish school. But it wasnt until she was 45 that Newton was able to attend college. She said she decided to get her degree because she had won so many awards for sewing at the state fair that she thought she should get more education on the profession. She plsase turn to page 8 |
