His father abused him as a child, so he left home at 19 and joined the U.S. Marines. Like many veterans of Vietnam he walked back into society with his addictions firmly in place and with no direction in life. He made an effort to straighten out his life but soon fell deeper into using as well as dealing drugs. Mullins was also stealing to survive, but he was able to evade the authorities. He rode freight trains and moved around a great deal. He finally ended up in jail in Moab, Utah, for riding in a stolen vehicle. It was at this time that he began to get tired of the life he was living and made the decision to seek help. Mullins entered a number of treatment centers and was in and out of several rescue Mission rehabilitation programs, but nothing worked for him. I had reached the end of the road. I just broke down and pleaded with God to help me. I decided to surrender... I was so tired of doing things my way, said Mullins. God answered my prayer and led me to the Salt Lake Mission. The course of instruction included basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT). The basic military trainee received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history and traditions. During AIT, the soldier completed combat engineer training and learned to perform basic combat construction and rigging operations; operate light and heavy engineer wheeled and armor tracked vehicles; assist in assembly and maintenance of military standard float and fixed bridges; prepare, install, and prime firing systems for demolition and explosives; and recognize and neutralize land mines, firing devices and booby traps. Heddlesten is the son of Wanda K. and William F. Heddlesten of 3470 S. Brock St., West Valley, Utah. Marine Corps Pvt. Nevhi C. Self. a 1995 graduate of Cyprus High Schpol in Magna, Utah, recently completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. Self successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Self and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps core values - honor, courage and commitment, and what those words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct.
