Show Statewide Thursday, August 19, All About Watering Plants The Many plant losses come from over-o- r condioverWatering occurs with those that prefer tions less often with ones that prefer to be rather dry. may be a matter of just one day of neglect, which can be quite sufficient to kill a plant. This does not mean you need to water every day. It does mean that you must examine every plant every day Draw lukewarm water from the faucet. The water should always be at least room temperature. Water more actively during active growth periods (warm seasons). When plants stop growing, reduce watering (cooler seasons). Never pour cold water on the leaves. The speed with which moisture dries out in the soil of your pots depends upon the amount of soil relative to the size of the plant, the packing of the soil and absorption by the plant. That is why you cannot count on all your plants needing water at the same lime. There are some that are forever thirsty while others, which may be much larger, use up very little water. In summer it is not at all unusual to find the soil in the pot of a thirsty plant bone dry in the evening after you have watered thoroughly in the morning. Spraying can mean setting a plant under a bathroom shower and thoroughly dousing it. Or it can mean the showering of a plant with a spray can, which completely covers the leaves with water so that they can drip. Misting requires a very fine nozzle for the spray. The moisture is deposited on the plant in such fine droplets that they do not conjugate and run off the leaves. The effect of spraying is much like rain. The effect of misting is to increase greatly the humidity on the surface of leaves. Overwatering vs. loo much water: DONT BE TOO CONFUSED there is a difference. Overwatering means watering too often. Too much means giving your plants too much water at one time. Whenever directions caution you not to overwatet, leave the plant alone until it is dry to the touch. Give it lots of water. If your pot has proper drainage, excess water will drain away. While on vacation, plants can be kept happy for weeks by means of wicks. These are lengths of fiberglass that are poked through the bottom of the pots into the soil and dangle into a tray containing water. under-waterin- just-moi- st g.
