Ft Uh6 Deportment rty jjOW Dole Simons Things went bad right from the start as the pitcher for my sons team gave up two hits and six walks in the first inning. Hirow in a couple of errors and before you know it my favorite team is down six to nothing, and the grass I was sitting on was getting mighty hard. Our team went out one two three and things really began to look bleak indeed. The dwarf we had on the mound continued his antics in the second inning and our boys handed them a couple more runs. I was getting really worried by the fourth inning and believed there was no way our guys could get in the win column. I began to wonder what was playing on television, and thought maybe it was time for a sandwich and a fresh limeade. I had plain lost my faith that the good guys had any chance of winning. I got up off the grass I had been punishing and went home. Life gets tough when you lose faith and baseball games become impossible when you feel your chances of winning are gone. We aD use faith every day. You know, we flip the switch and expect the light to come on, or we turn the car ignition and feel that the motor will start. We go to bed at night full well expecting the sun to come up on the marrow. I believe in light switches, ignitions, and the sun, its baseball that really tests my faith and causes me to leave games early. And so I gave up and a couple of hours later my son burst thru the door shouting, We won." I dont believe it," I said. Its true," he said, and held up the traditional reward, a big sub from the dairy queen. Tell me. I yelled, I was ecstatic. As he told me I was proud of my boy and ashamed of myself for bailing out early. The story of the come from behind victory was glorious. I have set the highlights to poetry with some apologies to Casey at the bat: It seemed extremly rocky for the rug rat nine that day, the score stood six to eight with but an inning left to play so when Cooney died at second, and Burrows did the same a pallor wreathed the features of the patrons of the game. Most of us got up to go, leaving there the rest, with the hope that springs eternal within the human breast for they thought If only Sayer could get a whack at that theyd put even money now with Sayer at the bat. But Si preceeded Sayer, and likewise so did Blake, and the former was a puddin, and the latter was a flake so on that strick on multitude a death like silence sat, for there seem to be no chance of Sayer getting to the bat. O U O ' eJPorts Now faith Is the substance of things hoped for, evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 The other night, having nothing better to do and knowing it was a bad night on television, I drifted down to the ball park to watch one of those great Little League games. Why did I pick that woeful Wednesday anyway and why that dreadful game? I know why, my son was playing and gave me strict orders to be there. It was five in the evening and there I was the dutiful father lounging on the grass and second guessing every move my son made. You know, Why doesnt be hustle more?" Why doesnt be back up second?", Why cant he hit that teams pitcher?". Larry Kelley of Yale, one of only s two to win a Heisman, was chosen the following year. The year that Huarte won, he outpolled another pretty good quarterback whom the pros found attractive a fellow named Joe Namath. 1982-Magn- ? A Safer Summer If poison ivy has ever cut short your summer vacation, or left you with a very uncomfortable memory of one, you are probably wise to the many precautions surrounding this plant. Every year, however, there are vast numbers of people who come in contact with poison ivy and suffer from the results. It is always a good idea, therefore, to be able to identify the plant on sight. This is true for children, as well as adults. Interestingly, the intact skin of the poison ivy plant is harmless! It is only when the plant has been bruised, or injured, and contact with its juice is made that dermatitis, or skin inflammation, will occur. This usually happens more often in the spring and summer months when the leaves are young, soft, and easily bruised. Keep this in mind when working outside your house. Inspect the grounds thoroughly for poison ivy. This simple step could help you avoid an unpleasant contact with the plant in the future. Campers and hikers should dress accordingly when in unfamiliar territory. Wearing long pants, or knee socks, and shirts with long sleeves is always a good idea. Sometimes, people mys- teriously become victims of the poison ivy plant, although they cant remember coming into contact with it! In fact, direct contact with the plant is not necessary. The oily resin which is found in the roots, stems, and leaves can attach itself to your clothing, or even to your dogs hair. Consequently, transfer of the resin could come from the gloves that you used for weeding, or a shirt sleeve on which you wiped your face. Even the innocent act of petting your dog could produce dermatitis. If you do come in contact with poison ivy, the first thing you should do is to remove the contaminated clothing and wash your skin with soap and water. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin and the amount of toxin contacted, first signs of the reaction will probably occur in two hours. It will appear as red swollen skin or a rash with mild to intense itching and burning. As the rash progresses, raised lesions develop, often appearing like tiny blisters. Eventually, they will ooze, dry, and form a crust. With proper medical treatment, however, the majority of poison ivy rashes will disappear in 14 to 20 days. Even with proper treatment, the lesions may open, so it is wise to keep an ample supply of Curity Sterile Gauze Pads and Curity Stretch Bandages on hand. If a lesion opens, check the exposed area for any debris or dirt and clean it gently if necessary. A Curity Gauze Pad should be placed over the lesion to help prevent infection and to allow it to heal undisturbed. Treating the poison ivy rash on yourself, or on somebody else, frequently causes concern, but you need not worry about spreading or contracting the dermatitis. The fluid from the blisters is not contagious. Remember to consult your physician if the rash is severe or if youre not sure that it is a reaction to poison ivy. to call double order of coffee a -- TT ijosw unussmnni goieed Waiters have been known "pair of drawers." |
