Only minutes before Ray Jr. had watched from ringside on the grounds of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas as his dad united boxings welterweight titles by stopHit Man" ping Thomas Hearns in the 14th round. It was a fight that more than a few boxing experts put on a level with such classic as matchups Tunney-Dempsey- , and caber (a pole), putting a stone shot, throwing the hammer, and tossing the sheaf. In a sudden reversal of roles Sugar Ray played the bully, stalking the much larger Hearns around the ring. A series of uppercuts put Hearns temporarily on the canvas, but he was up at the count of eight. In the 14th, Sugar Ray finished off his opponent with a vicious combination of lefts and rights. Referee Davey Pearl stopped the fight at 1:45 of the round after Leonard's punches had Hearns in a land, his stare as vacant as Little Orphan Annies. It was Hearns first loss after 32 victories. Those critics of Sugar Ray that remained after his earlier fights with Wilfredo Benitez and Roberto Duran, were silenced. No one in his right mind could now call Leonard a media hype. "I always believed I had something to prove after the 1976 Olympics, said Sugar Ray, who emerged from Montreal as boxings latest darling. Suddenly, I was fighting on television for fairly large purses and there were some people around who didn't feel I had paid my dues. It was important that I prove them' wrong. Now that he has, Sugar Ray Leonard is looking to find a place in the history books next to such boxers as Henry Armstrong, who once held three titles simultaneously, and fighters who held two major weight division crowns, like Sugar Ray Robinson and Emile Griffith. The 7 UP Super Star is not about to sit home and count his money or chuck his sport for movie and TV offers, until he proves to the world that hes one of the best ever to tie on a pair of gloves. And, learning to perfect his jump shot, Ray Jr. will just have to wait. one reason why is not quite to turn in his gloves for a basketball. As one of the worlds most popular boxers, he has such craftsmen as Pipino o Cuevas, Aaron Pryor, Benitez and Marvin Hagler waiting in the wings for a shot at the champ at whatever a weight and piece, of the dollar pie. In the ring against Hearns, a fighter yvith. a substantial height and reach advantage and a reputation as a pugilistic assassin, the 7UP Super Star showed both tremendous boxing ability and raw courage. It was billed as a showcase of speed vs. power. Speed won by showing more than a little power of its own. I knew the fight was very close, Sugar Ray said soon after the match was history. I knew he was scoring and I hadnt been throwing many punches. I brought it up from my guts, from the bottom of my heart." As three judges would attest, though only a handful of ringside scorers would Which Sugar ready to 24 hour Leonard . Of the 55,000 people who die a year, a reliable estimate is that 5,500 might have developed cancer if cigarette smoking had romanticized been not (sometimes for secret pay- ments) in motion pictures, False Q True Leonard knew he was in deep trouble. So did his corner. After the 12th round, a closed circuit television audience of millions could hear Sugar Rays manager Angelo Dundee tell him, Kid, youre blowing it. The will to win, as Cus D Amato, the ancient boxing oracle said, would decide the outcome of the fight. At this point, both boxers were running on empty. s. r. Nostradamus was a psychic from the 1500s who made predictions up to the year 3000. To date all of his predictions supposedly have come true. He told about the Napoleonic war, the assassination of the Kennedys, and much, much more. His predictions for our future include a drought in 1986 that will be extremely devastating. If his predictions comes true, how many of you have any food storage and water put away? Im not saying this making. For those who didnt, concur, Hearns was winning the fight as it entered the 14th round. Oh, my Papa, he always understood." This Sunday will be Fathers Day and a big day in the lives of America's Papas. You remember Fathers Day. Its a day somewhat like Mother's Day except you dont spend as much money. Im sure we all love and appreciate our fathers and wish for them the best on their special day. Fathers contribute many things to their children and families, not the least of which is athletic influence. If the children have athletic indinat ions, the father can really help their careers along. Athletics and fathers seem to go together and always will. It usually starts when the kids are young and they begin to wrestle on the living room floor. W restling. living room style, is good for family comraderie and teaches small wrestlers about body contact and how to be aggressive. There are lots of carry-ove- r values that come from carpet Dads, if you want your little ones to be sports minded, you may have to become a Little League coach and spend your summers on the baseball diamond rather than in a patio chair. Sure, its hot out in the sun, but thats how fathers help their sons become good baseball players. You might even have to go the second mile and hit some fungoes on the front lawn and even throw some batting practice. After all, what are dads for anyway? It has been said that children become what they see, and wouldnt it be a nice thing if your kids saw a good athletic example and thus, become a good athlete? Remember, you are the only father your son will ever have,, so you ought to do the best job you know how to do. It may require you to take him fishing, hunting, and camping, or to throw a football in the street. And you may even have to become a scoutmaster. There are other things you can do, like put a basket on the garage and get him involved in Y.B.A. basketball, but most of all, youve got to have some common interest. Maybe its the golf course or the tennis court or some other place where father and son can be buddies. I suggest athletics because of the physical and mental development, not to mention the carryover values. Good luck. dads. Have a nice Fathers Day!
