Times writer Paul Grimes recently sent a letter to the Salt Lake Bureau requesting material for an article he was doing. A similar letter requested went to 169 other cities. Only 105 percent. The results of the survey were published in the Sunday (April 25) edition of the Salt Lake Tribune. According to Grimes, In each case, it wasnt the quantity and packaging (of the response he received), but the quality of information, the degree of guidance made available to the first-tim- e that visitor, prospective determined the rating. The request was very routine, Janis Fierce, information manager for the Salt Lake Bureau said. We get similar requests almost daily from travel writers, and our response package, depending on specific requirements of course, is nearly the same every time. In fact, our general response includes about the same material we provide for the general mail from the public. requests being procesred. Mr. Grimes request was one of 2.188 mail requests processed in the first three months of this ' year. she said; Mr. Grimes criteria for judging the response from each city included: does the d tours response package have with does the maps; restaurant guild list more than just names and addresses, does it provide specific information; is there a good calendar of events; are specific attractions listed with hours of operation and prices : is there a list of emergency phone numbers and guidance on how to get to the nearest hospital?
