The young men, five scouts and their leader, were each candidates for the order of the arrow, a special award earned only after strict ordeal undergoing requirements. The ordeal is patterned after certain Indian ceremonies that tested the bravery, courage, and dedication of those young braves who wished to earn the right to become men and warriors. Ryan Hulse, Brandt Goble, Robert Quinn, Robert Hill, John Brown, and in Richard Hill participated the ceremonies. Each were chosen by their peers in the respective troops to endure theorderl. An overnight camp was made under the stars. Each scout was to be alone to comtemplate his ordeal. Requirements included a fast and prohibition of any talking. At sunrise, each candidate was assigned a day of hard labor and service. The projects included repairing a cabin, hillside platform, and camp facilities. According to Bob Quinn, the ordeal is a time for each candidate to reflect on their scouting experiences and to realize that should they pass the ordeal, they are then commissioned to assist their fellow scouts to more fully enjoy and understand scouting and the outdoors. In the evening, each of the candidates were adjudged worthy to be inducted into the brotherhood of the order of the arrow. Each may later qualify as a brotherhood or vigil member by completing additional hours of service. 24-ho- ur man who caught name of Babe Ruth's ivisNsns (Serendipity deports by Where are they now? .
