It is possible that some salaried employes will be cut back in the future, but the exact number of employes who will be laid off and the date is not yet known. The copper industry is in a depressed state because the two biggest purchasers, the housing and automotive industries, just arent buying copper. High interest rates and a weakening economy have contributed to the cut backs at Kennecott. Ken Hochstetler, director of communication and public affairs at Kennecott, said a mass recall of employes who were laid off is not feasible. The layoff will be indefinite. However', employes with the highest seniority would be first to be recalled in cases where other employees have retired. Hochstetler said cutbacks are a result of supply and demand. Since the demand for copper is low, the prices for it go down, and the company is forced to cutback employes.
