Show V Magna Times, Magna, Utah MAGNA TIMES Mr. and Mrs. Oral Kemp and family, Mr. and (Mrs. Richard Higley and family, accompanied by Mr.- Max Barnes of Salt Lake City and Miss Marie Porter of Morgan enjoyed a most pleasant - - one cannot help has passed but Independence Day of thinking about circumstances surrounding same. The time is July 4, 1776. The place: Philadelphia. Occasion? A meeting of the Continental Congress. Purpose? To approve a docu ment written by a Virginia farmer and lawyer named Thomas Jefferson. The oldest man there was Benjamin Franklin. Tom Lynch, Jr, a South He was 70. The youngest was Carolina fanner. By August 2, 1776 the Declaration of Independence had been signed by all 56 men lawyers, physicians, farmers, soldiers, jurists, manufacturers, educators. Most were native born, but several were of foreign birth. Even then the group was a representative cross sec . tion of America. of Result? The United States America, grown, in its 184, years of existence as an organized political entity, into the mightiest nation on earth in all history. And yet at this very time when we are perched on the pinnacle of our pride, we are beset with doubts as to our aims and confused over our purposes. Quo Vadis, America? Whither goest thou, America? Has the elimination of hardship begotten indolence of spirit? Is the attaing ment of luxury and producing contempt for things too easily obtained? Is the reduction of working hours resulting only in aimlessness? Will our underestimation of the fierce desires among the hungry people of the world make us fat and easy prey for their paralyzing sting? Are we seceding from the human race by seeking a cozy cocoon of comfort at any cost? Quo Vadis, America! men of courage and vision put their names to a docu Fifty-si- x ment 184 years ago, and pledged their own and each others Lives, Fortunes and Sacred Honor. Their purpose was to free themselves of tyranny and to take the helm of destiny into their own hands. What can we, 180 million citizens of this mighty nation, now sa; r is our purpose and what will we mutually pledge in its defense? Let " us ask ourselves this question today. well-bein- J 3785 South GRASS FIRES STI1L KEEP .1QCAL 'HOPPING!"
