This notorious police method has in )cars past dricen thousands of motorists from l.os Angeles. If continued it will sidetrack tourist traffic away from the coast metropolis the business that more than anything else has kept the city flourishing. The dragnet" consists of uncontrolled halting of automobiles at any time or place the cops see fit. Night after night it clogs boulevards with lanes of barely moving traffic while the uniformed upholders of law and order brazenly violate the constitution of he United States by looking through automobiles just to see what they can find. Senseless in its conception and provocative of unnecessary delays to motorists in a hurry to get somewhere, this system is the last resort of a police department unable to move efficiently toward the solution of its criminal problems. Its operation in a city already traffic-bounamounts to imbecility. Its continued use after police have been instructed that search and seizure is unlawful under the fundamental laws of the land ( of course, the Los Angeles amounts police could not be expected to know' that to a flagrant disregard of the rights of citizens. One Los Angeles newspaper, The Record, has had the courage to stand up for the motorists of that city More will likely follow suit. But meanwhile, the word goes around keep your automobile 'out of Los Angeles they are using the dragnet again. Monson. WHERE DEPRESSION HURTS YE DIARY (October 15) The failure of prosperity may be worrying the government of this country, but the problem at Washington is as nothing compared with the problem faced in certain governments south of the Isthmus of Panama. In the United States, a business depression is apt to bring an unfavorable result at the polls, but in South America it is apt to bring on a revolution. It is hardly too much to say that practically all of the current South American revolts originated in trade depressions. Citizens of any country gec restive when business is bad, but in Latin America they get downright violent. It is foolish, of course, for any country to blame hard times on the government in power. But at least the situation here isnt as bad as it might be. Just suppose that our disillusioned voters were rushing to the armories instead of to the ballot box!
