The mediators are Dan Edwards, chairman of the state labor relations board and Ralph R. Williams of the federal mediation and conciliation service. Mr. Williams said that in the proposals "we are attempting to f el out a common ground" for a p ' ble ettlement of the dispute wh.ch has kept more than 5608 idle and resulted in 28 loss in d tnestic copper production. Governor Offers Aid Governor J. Bracken Lee Monday asserted the strike at Kennecott Copper Corporation is causing widespread damage to the people of Utah and offered his services in an effort to bring about a settlement of the difficulty which idled the nations largest copper mine. In letters to officials of the comof pany and the Brotherhood Locomotive Firemen and Engine-mewhich have 'been relayed to the Magna Times and Garfield Leader, Governor Lee said: You may be assured of my sincere and honest interest in the return to their joibs of those now out of work, and in the resumption of the Kennecott production so vital to our state. He offered his assistance in any manner that may be helpful in achieving the settlement of this paralyzing situation. Governor Lee continued by saying: The shutdown is causing widespread damage to the people of Utah. This loss is expressed in terms of lost payroll, lost production, lost taxes and other major items. It is further emphasized in the spreading effects which have caused shutdown. and layoff in many dependent industries and businesses. But more important than this is the acute suffering of the many families whose income has stopped, and to whom unemployment compensation benefits barely provide the necessities of life. In behalf of the people of Utah, therefore, may I strongly urge that an imn.ediate settlement be effected and wr.k iesumed at the mines, mill; and smelter. Both the company and the brotherhood, I am sure, have merit in their respective points of view.
