Smelters In Salt Uke valley, aided by the United States bureau of mines station at the University of Utah have taken a lead In metallurgical development and their combined efforts have done much In maintaining Utah as the leading mining and smelting area In the world. Smelters find It necessary to set certain - amount of their revenue for metallurgical research. As a result improvements are being made In the recovery of metals. These Improvements are passed on to the miner and often result In material savings to them, which helps In maintaining the mining Industry of the state and In bringing In ores from outside states. One of the most Important developments of recent years was selective flotation. Trior to the development of this type of metal recovery the miner was penalized for lino contained In ores. The above photograph of the newly constructed plant of the International Smelting & Refining plant at Ophir, which was placed In operation last month, is a e example of what hat happened. The plant was erected for tire- - purpose of treating' approxi-mntel400,000 tons of tailings from the old Ophir Hill Consolidated mill. The old mill which was operated prior to 1925 (ailed to catch all the metals in the ora and much of the valuable metals passed to the tailings pond. The tailings are estimated to contain 9 per cent lead, H per cent copper and a few ounces silver to the ton. The Ophir plant was erected at a cost of $130,000 and will furnish employment for 35 men. Erection of the plant has also stlmnlsted activity at other properties in the Ophir region. .
