Show MAGNA UTAH, l' vl 4 Now that the root crops, cabbage potatoes, and squashes have been dug and stored foe winter, four important items should be considered to insure successful storage, says Prof. J, C. Hogenaon, extension agronomist of the Utah State Agricultural College. Temperature control, moisture comrol. and convenience art the items referred to by Professor Hogenaon. Losses in storage due to high temperatures art greater than those from freezing, says the Utah agronomist; therefore, potatoes should be kept at a temperature below 42 degrees F. and not below 33 degrees F. This temper ature is ideal also fqfeonioos and root crops. Squashes, pumpkins and sweet potatoes arc the only vegetables which main their quality in warm places, says Professor Hogenaon. They under go rapid decay; consequently, their storage period is brief at best. Root vegetables require rather large amounts of mortal in the air of the storage, while oniona will apod rapidly if the humidity is high. Carrots, blets. turnips and parsnips reauire more moisture in the sir than '00 potatoes' and cabbages: however, all of these crops may be stored in the tame room if the relative humidity approaches saturation, be tays. If drop of moisture condense on the water pipes and windows, c banal arc that these crops will keep fairly well. Vtntilation consists of changing the air supply. This serves at a means of moisture control, temperature control and piovides a supply of oxygen fot the life activities of the crops. This !a.t condition is important only during the first few daya after the produce it placed in storage. After the dormant condition is reached the oxygen requirement is very low. It is recommended, for convenience, ihat vegetable rooms in the home be equipped with bins and sbclvaa whkh 1932 J umor Police Forced BOARD OF EDUCATION ISSUES A STATEMENT ON BANK CASE DELAY AGRONOMIST TELLS OF PROPER STORAGE FOR VEGETABLES r Fill DAY, OCTOBER 28, THE MAGNA TIMES Issued Every Friday at Magna, Utah Entered at the postoffke at Magna.
