Retd Snoot, United Sratei Senator was bora in Salt Lake City, Utah, January 10, 1862, ton of Abraham Owen and Anne Krixtina (Morrison) Smoot. His father, a native of Ken tucky, was a Utah Pioneer, Mayor of Salt Lake City for ten years and Mayor Reed of Provo for fourteen years. Smoot received his education in the public schools of Salt Lake City, at the University of Deseret and the Brigham Young Academy, where he was graduated in 1879. During the next twenty-thre- e years he was identified with various banking, wool manufacturing and mining enterprises in Utah, becoming one of the leading business men of the State. He was appointed an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in ! s i i ! I i 1900. r- - As a statesman and a churchman. Senator Smoot always manifested a deep interest in religious principles and endeavored to apply them. During the national emergency in the early days of April, 1917, when the United States he declared war against Germany, stood in his place in the Senate, and, with bowed head, invoked Divine assistance for an early conclusion of the war. In addition to these local achievements. Senator Smoot has secured the passage of numerous bills affording public and private relief to citizens of Utah.
