Show PRIZES FOR POETS AND FOR MUSICIANS noteworthy effort to secure for utah an anthem that will be full of merit poets and musicians of 0 utah have been called upon to compete tor for the honor of providing for this state a popular anthem the suggestion was some time ago made to the salt lake tribune and that newspaper has agreed to take the matter in hand and offer six prizes amounting to 1 as a reward tor for the efforts of the corn eom peti tors it Is claimed by the promoters a ol 01 this enterprise that there is but one state in the union that has a state an them it Is believed that athin within a few years almost every state will have an anthem and that there Is no good rea son why utah should be the last to adopt one the conditions ol 01 the contest which Is now on is that the words of the anthem contain not more than five stanzas nor less than three stanzas each stanza not to exceed eight lines it Is optional with the author whether or not there shall be a chorus authors name safeguarded the manuscript must be submitted in a legible hand or typewritten and there must be no name nor address written on the manuscript that would disclose the identity of the author enclosed with the manuscript must be a blank envelope containing the name address anu and place ol 01 birth of the au an thor and this envelope must be secure aly y sealed manuscripts should be ma led to anthem contest editor tribune salt lake city and pu receipt ot of it a key num nuin her iier will be given to the manu script and to the envelope enclosing the name but the name will not be known to any one until a committee has passed on the merits of the corn com position and recommended twenty five compositions as suitable for entry in the contest when these twenty five have been passed upon the se lection of the most popular one will be left to the vote of the people neither the tribune nor the commit tee will know who ho is the author until this selection has been made manu mann scripts for the words of the anthem must reach the salt lake tribune by 10 0 clock p in september I 1 musicians opportunity after the people have decided which ts the best poem the musicians will be called upon to fit music to the words and the contest for the music will close at 10 a clock p in october 12 when the people will again be asked to decide which Is the most popular music one or a dozen compositions either words or music may be sub bitted by any person the only unit tation being that the author either be now flow a citizen of utah or a utahn by birth manuscripts must be submitted separately that is two or more must not be enclosed in the same en delope the prizes offered by the tribune are as follows first best words 00 second best words 00 third best words 50 00 the only desire of the promoters is that the handsome reward offered will induce the literary and musical people of the state to pro duce an anthem touching ching the history characteristics resources or hopes of utah that will be distinctly a state song the committee that will sift the manuscripts will be announced in a few days and will be composed ol 01 the best known and most reputable literary and musical people in the state it will be a great honor to be known as the author of the words or the corn com poser of the music for the state an them of utah and in addition to this the six successful competitors will receive tor for their work sums sum in excess ol 01 the amounts paid by the highest class magazines to the best writers and composers in the country in offering the large sum as an inducement to the writers and composers of the state the promoters of the enterprise hope to in duce every lover of poetry and music I 1 in the state to take an interest in this contest and
