Show f South Grows Weaker Politically By LYLE C. WILSON' WASHINGTON Wl The evidence is piling up that southern leaders ere thinking hard about the fact that the South is being cut adrift politically. The influence o. southerners in the councils of the Democratic Party gradually has been pinched off. Southern votes cast for Re- publican presidential candidates have gained no influence there for the southern point of view. W'hat to do about all of tins is something southern Democratic spokesmen and office holders must now consider along with the significant fact that the new Negro vote in the South may be coming up with new leaders and new office holders. The direction of southern politi cal thinking was indicated last week by Janies F. Byrnes of, South Carolina, a qualified spokesman for his state. South Carolina is one of those in the; South committed by its legisla-- j ture to defy racial integration in the schools by every legal means. Byrne List Objectives He served in the House and, Senate, au associate justice of the Supreme Court, as secretary of( state and, more recently, as governor of South Carolina . At Bennettsville, S. C., last week, Bvmes snipped out a pat-- i tern for southern political action and objectives, as follows: 'Notwithstanding the political gloom which now surrounds us, the South may be restored to its place in the councils of the nation j i if its leaders, forgetting all political differences, will now begin to organize for a united South. "Y'ou may be sure that, under present conditions, no man South of the Potomac will be placed oil the presidential ticket of either party unless that man is willing to betray his people. "But. if jou oigamze and let the people know the southern states are not in the bag for either political party, we may ha. a some chance of securing written pledges that will assure some respect for the U. S. Constitution and a greater respect for local government" Thats about it. Bvrnes prescription is that the South find a political alliance within which it may regain a substantial voicem 1 S. It seems more likely that the South will go it alone politically than establish the political alliance Byrnes suggested South's Natural Policy The natural policy wluch the South most urgently desires to es- -' tablish would relate to the over-- 1 all problem of race relations, what Sen Richard B. Russell j Ga ) termed the commingling of the white and Negro races. Neither the Republican Party nor the elements of the Democratic Party would be likely to welcome an alliance on those terms. The Negro vote outside the South is too impoitant for either party to dicker with the South on civil rights or on states D-- rights, either. -- Coffee Prices Are Lowered THCRSDAY OCTORFt nan (Cache County) THE HERALD JOURNAL were accused of carelessnesa and negligence. - SAN FRANCISCO (IP Damage suits totaling $400,000 were on file today against a Salt Lake City trucking line as a result of an accident between an auto and a truck near Truckee, Calif , pound Needed to win: 266! the wholesale level.
