SALT LAKE CITY (Special) When Gene Fullmer, recently crowned world middleweight boxing champion, makes his first fight at the fairgrounds coliseum here on Monday, January 28, his d opponent will be shooting for an upset victory. The new champion is signed to defend his ring prestige in a ten round non-titbout against Wilf Greaves of Pittsburgh, Penn. Greaves is a slugger, managed by the cagey veteran, Jake Mintz, who piloted Charles to the world heavyweight championship. The challengers profesional ring record is 14 victories in 17 starts, with three split decision losses . . . each of which was a ring robbery according to the loquacious Mintz. Lodges A Beef One of the split defeats caused quite a stir in boxing circles. In September Greaves boxed Tiger Jones, worlds third ranking middleweight, on a nationally televised program from Washington, D. C. Ringsiders booed the decision lustily. The first judge scored the fight for Greaves, the second voted for Jones, and the referee decided the issue on points in favor of the Tiger, 44 to 43. Since then the Tiger Jones camp has pointedly refused a rematch, Prior to this, Jones had decisioned Sugar Ray Robinson. Mintz said that the heavy expenses involved in moving his fighter and trainers to Salt Lake City will preclude any great profit from the affair. What we have to gain Is in shooting to defeat the new champion, Mintz declared. After all, his head is swelled up, and so is his belly from the road work he has been doing on the banquet circuit. A win or even a strong showing could well force Fullmer into a title defense against Greaves later. The Pittsburgh boxing club made a strong bid for this fight but were counted out because of Fullmers desire to show first before the home folks. Tickets for the event may be obtained by mail orders to The Mint, 26 East Second South, Salt Lake City. All seats are reserved: $10, $7.50 and $5. The sale will be limited to coliseum capacity of 4500. The program will not be televised. 4-- highly-regarde- le Ez-za- rd B-l- ' Ruled Valid DETROIT (W The Detroit Lions and the National Football League won a major battle Friday with Canadian professional Ontarfootball when a three-ma- n io Supreme Court ruled quarterback Tom Dublinskis contract with Detroit wras valid when Dub-linsjumped to Toronto.
