He has been aptly called The Chinese Mark Twain. His humor Is delightful, and good wholesome fun permeates his lectures at all times. Within the bounds of this human restriction, it is safe to say that all but a few of our newspapers are run in a spirit of honesty. They may not perfectly succeed, but they try to present the facts of the news accurately and impartially. The effort is always there; the success is there only a part of the time. The reason is that the owner of a newspaper is not the only human being attached to the paper. Every one of its servitors is human, subject to his own personal dislikes and preferences," subject to the average of human failure. Here is the point where the real mistakes in the newspaper occur. The owner may be of the highest character of American citizen. He may do his utmost to give his paper the high stamp of his own conscience. But in the issuance of his paper he must depend upon other human beings with their weaknesses. He may have built up and drilled what he takes to be a g and perfect system of But his system i3 composed of human elements. And it is in this system, in this complicatnewsed process of and that handling, the mangling of the news occurs. The presenting of the news can he made more perfect only as humanity itself becomes more perfect. In the Meantime a good deal of mischief can be done, and is done. There is no escaping it. But there is an escaping of the consequences. If the readers of the newspapers understood more intimately the hard conditions under which the news they read is gathered and handled, they would save themselves from many a misconception. They, would also read their papers with better understanding. Finally, they would better comprehend the struggling, baffled, blundering and yet succeeding life about them. After all, the mistakes of newspapers are only of a piece with the mistakes of life in general. news-gatherin- news-preseptme- news-gatherin- g, news-presenti- ng NO CHARGE.
