Show 3 THE PROVO POST Benefits of a Pasture By STERLING CLUFF Agricultural Department, Lincoln High School. On every farm a pasture is a very necessary thing,- it furnishes feed, plenty of fresh air, exercise, and freedom. When a cow is turned into a good pasture where there is plenty of green feed and good, clean water, she always has better health, and a cow in a good, healthy condition produces more and better milk. In a pasture a cow has to gather her own feed, and when a cow does this she has to exercise and such activity causes her to eat more, and the more she eats the more milk she will produce, for if a cow is bred for milk production the feed that she eats will be used for that purpose instead of flesh. An Jjxperiment was tried out to see h $pr long a cow would give milk without any feed; they milked her till she became so weak that they had to hold her up while they milked her. This shows that a milk cow that is bred for this purpose will produce milk till she uses up all the lime and mineral substances in her body that It takes to produce milk until she becomes too weak to carry. on her work. A pasture saves a lot of time and hand labor, by not having to feed hay and lead them to water three or four times a day which would have to be done if kept in a barn or cor- Ice Is a Necessity Especially in summer is ice essential to health and comfort. The pasture should be as near as possible to the barn so as to save time in getting the cows to and from the pasture. Where the soil is too wet for good paying crops it can be put into pasture, also in such places as along Provo river, where the cottonwood trees and brush are making use of the soil, some people would say, You have to wait two or three years for the stumps to rot so you could plow the ground, but you do not. You can cut out the underbrush and trim up the larger trees then loosen up the soil between the trees with a spring tooth harrow and plant your grass, why let cottonwood trees take the place of a herd of cows that will bring in a nice pocketful of money? A pasture should also have stream of water running through it, so the cows can have all they want to drink, because 87 per cent of the milk is water. To obtain a good pasture it is best to plant a mixture of grasses so that you will have pasture early in the spring till late in the fall.
