Show . THE PROVO POST f Abraham Lincoln Betty Compson Had Quick Rise Coming to Columbia UNCLE JOE' CANNON'S 33 TWO DOLLAR WATCH acan Betty Compson, whose first stirring picture, Prisoners of Love, will be shown at the Princess on Wednesday and Thursday, has been before the public professionally since she was a child. During her schdol days in Salt Lake City her fater purchased a valuable violin for her and placed her under the tutelage of the best instructor available. When she was. but fourteen years old her father died, and she resolved to help care for her mother by playing the violin in the orchestra of a small vaudeville and motion picture theater. She continued going ito school in spite of the fact that she had to play every night and at two matinees each week. After a few months she found her opportunity to take to the stage. A vaudeville team failed to arrive at the theater and the manager askied Betty if she could play from the stage as a special number. She had no frocks that were suitable for such an appearance, and suggested to the manager that she array herself in the ragged garb of a street musician. Her first effort as a public entertainer met with instant success. Later she went on a vaudeville tour and while playing in Los Angeles was seen by A1 Chrystie, who engaged her as leading woman for his comedies. Then George Loane Tucker engaged her to play the lead Uncle Joe Cannon has no patience with delicately constructed gold watches. He says they are too dainty and get out of order too easily. Years ago he stuck his fancy gold watch away in a bureau drawer and has not looked at it from that day to this. For a quarter of a century he has sported nothing more expensive than a dollar or two dollar watch. He declares they keep as good time as time pieces, and if he happens to drop one of them the loss is not worth mentioning. An amusing incident occurred over the purchase of one of these watches some years ago. Uncle Joe was campaigning in the district of the late James Sherman in New York state. One morning he left his watch in the Pullman car. He asked Sherman to take him to a store where they sold dollar watches. When the clerk informed him the price had been raised to two dollars, Uncle Joe lost no time in telling him how many kinds of a robber, he thought he was, and indignantly stamped out of the store. Similar treatment was experienced at the next two stores, and the speaker was getting angrier and angrier. Realizing that the reputation for honesty of his district was at stake, Sherman got a friend to engage the first citizen of Danville in conversation, in The Miracle Man. Miss Compson is now starring-a- t d it to the next while he store and said to the proprietor: the head of her own producing When Uncle Joe Cannon comes in here and asks the price of watches you tell him they are one dollar and, for the love of Mike, sell him one at Arizona Drv? Winifred Hanley, who plays Mrs. Lincoln, in John Drinkwaters Abraham Lincoln, which William Harris, Jr., is to present at the Columbia theater for one night, Monday, September 25, has made a careful study concerning Lincolns wife. She has decided that THE ONLY PROPERLY VENTILATED THEATER IN PROVO TONIGHT Mrs. Lincoln was a much misunderstood, frequently maligned woman, a pathetic figure, not the real love of her husbands heart and 'utterly lost behind his greatness. No figure in our history has been more closely studied than Lincoln and none so utterly neglected as his wife. To judge from the interest that stirs in the Drinkwater play, it is true that some one undertook to 10c, 25c, 35c RODOLPH VALENTINO in BLOOD AND SAND f With LILA LEE WEDNESDAY : clear the mystery of her character and the part she played in her husbands career. Suchshaping biographers as give her any attention state she was a high tempered virago, who, far from helping her husband, was the chief of his cares. Miss Hanley, however, concludes from her studies that this is a lamentable slander which should be corrected. Miss Hanley has received many letters commenting on her portrait and practically all agree she does a true one. In the search for material the papers of the 60s were searched. Mrs. Lincoln there was set down as a constant visitor to hospitals, a devoted mother, and, almost a mother to her husband in watchful care for his health. Other sources of information revealed Mrs. Lincoln as a wise and commonsense adviser to her husband, in a way much needed by men as he, living constantly in the world of thought. There is a pathetic note in the fact that Mrs. Lincoln through all her services must have been sure she could never displace in her husbands heart the image of Ann Rutledge. In writing Abraham Lincoln, Drinkwater found the authorities at such variance about Mrs. Lincoln that absolute reliance could be placed on one of them. The author finally decided to give Mrs. Lincoln the benefit of the doubt and painted his portrait of her accordingly. That it has met with such general approval from the people who knew Mrs. Lincoln is proof that his judgment was a good one. 7:30, 9:15 New Pantages Policy j NO ADVANCE IN PRICES. It is nearly always caused by the plant dust (pollen) from wild plants. A majority of the cases in the southern United States are caused by the and giant pollen from the common which grow i in neglected fields and along roadsides. Hay fe- i rag-wee- ds ver may also be caused by pollen from wormwood, cockleburs, and the goldenrod. A spring type of the disease is caused by certain kinds of ) i grasses. In addition to the persons who suffer from regular types of hay fever, there are others who suffer from the emanations of animals, such as the horse, the cat, the dog, and from the odors of certain fruits and flowers, from musk and ipecac. The symptoms of hay fever begin soon after the inhalation of the pollen or odor; these are congestion of the nostrils, reddening and itching of eyelids, irritation of the roof of the mouth and throat, and spasmodic attacks of sneezing. As a rule, marked depression and bodily weakness follow an attack, especially if the attacks come on at short intervals. The best treatment of hay fever is to find the cause and remove it; whatever plant or plants bring on an attack should be destroyed and prevented from growing near the house. The ragweed and the goldenrod, being the chief cause, should be particularly avoided. In severe cases andnec-in cases of long standing, it is often essary for the patient to remove to a locality where these weeds do not LACKED DETAIL Visitor- to Scottish Village My good woman, do you live in this vil- ANNOUNCENENT well-balanc- ed Wednesday Thursday BETTY COMPSON y.
