WEALTH WAITS IN COLORADOS LANDS SCHOOL OF This is the Eighth of a Series of Articles Written Exclusively for THE POST by Men of National Reputation. By OLIVER H. SHOUP. Specializing in all Ball Room Dancing. - Expert in- DANCING struction, with correction of faults. Inspires 'confidence and enables one to become very proficient in a few lessons.' -- Editors NoteThe following by Governor Oliver H. Shoup of Colorado may give you a new viewpoint of the vast territory that lies along the towering mountains of the west There are many possibilities touched upon in bis article and as chief executive of the Btate he is in a position to have knowledge as well as enthusiasm. Did you know you have a part ownership of 120,000,000 acres of land? Did yon know that there are acres of land out in the golden west waiting for those who wish homesteads and who need only comply with the simple government rules to own a farm of their own? More Important, did you know that millions bf these acres are worthless now because you and your neighbors never took the trouble to find out about them and ask that their arid wastes be turned Into producing gardens capable ot feeding untold thousands? Millions ot acres of land are waiting in the west for the coming of water and that water can be obtained through the aid of the United States government, an aid that would not be withheld if you and your neighbors expressed a desire to see it go flowing through the deserts and transform them to a great aid T to America. Did you know that out in Colorado end all through the Rocky Mountain section there waits one of the richest fields ot natural resources the world has ever known bat that production is far, far behind, that capital has opportunities for unlimited development, that the advice, "Go west, young man, is still a living message? It is true that in the past three years more than 30.000,000 acres of homestead and Indian lands have been entered in the Rocky Mountain states, mostly by farmers from the Mississippi valley, and millions of acres of raw land have been placed under cultivation. TRAVEL BY AUTO. The main current of the swelling stream of tourist travel that flows 192.-000,0- into the west each year is made up of people who have not traveled extensively in the past. Most of them are' people of moderate means. Visitors to the national parks and national forests come from every state In the Union and every year they Include thousands who are making tours of the west tor the first time. Most of them travel by automobile and many of them carry their camping outfits with them, living all the time in the open air and enjoying to the full the wonderful climate which is one of natures richest gifts to the west. The tourist and homeseeker movement to the west is especially gratifying to those ot ns who are interested In the development ot this vast area, for we realize that development here depends to a very large extent upon the of the entire country, and the people ot other sections of the United 8tates can not he expected to eo operate freely in the development of the west until they are better informed about what such development means for all the nation. It should be borne in mind that the area of the eighty Rocky Mountain states is 549,840,000 acres, or approximately 29 per cent of the area of the entire country, while the combined areas of the eight Rocky Mountain states and the three Pacific coast states is 753,420,800 acres, or nearly 40 per cent of .the area ot the United States, exclusive of Alaska and our Insular possessions.- - A PUBLIC TRUST. But it is not generally understood that all the people of the United lt States own more than of this vast area. In these eleven states there are more than 130,000,000 acres of national forests, the property ot the federal government, on which one-ha- timber la being grown and preserved for the benefits ot all the people. These forests are not the property of the states in which they are located nor of the people ot these states, bnt of all the people. In other words, about 16 per cent ot the area ot these eleven states is national forests be longing to the government. In these states there is approximately 192,000,000 acres of government land open to homestead entry. This is more than 25 per cent of their total area. Some of this land is suitable for dry farming, but much of it can never be farmed profitably without irrigation and most ot it, so far as we know now, la valuable only tor grazing purposes and for the minerals it contains. The reclamation of this public agricultural land and the development ot its mineral resources depends npon the attitude of the federal government, and that attitude depends largely upon knowledge of the possibilities of the west. While these eleven states include nearly 40 per cent of the area of the country they contain only a little more than eight per cent of the countrys population. In 1910 they contained about seven per cent of the population and in 1900 only about five per cent. These states are increasing in population more rapidly than the country at large, bnt their greatest need still is more people. W solicit your patronage. Vice-Preside- nt , Nearly 50 per cent of the available coal of the country la found in these eleven states. The great hulk of the nations production ot gold and sliver has come from these states. They have produced immense quantities of eopper, lead and zinc and still have vast supplies of these metals to be worked. Americas supplies of tungsten and molybdenum are found almost exclusively in the west, end the same Is true ot vanadium and other metals of that group. The Rocky Mountain West gave radium to the world. The water resources of these western states are almost Illimitable. They produce a very large percentage of the countrys petroleum output, and their oil shales are capable ot producing, with proper development, more petroleum than has been producet in the entire world up to date and more than is contained in all the known oil fields of the world.
