Notwithstnading the end of the good roads convention the people of this section should not lost sight of road building, for it is one of the most necessary essentials in the civie life of any eommunityor Estate today. The roads are the highways of success in practically every instance for both farmer and business man for neither can succeed as well without good roads as he can with. them. At the present time the beautifurProvdTany6n t!ouId 7je lhbwh"'off T6much bet-le- r advantage had we as "good a road leading from Springdell to Charleston us there is from Provo to Springdell, for it would then become one of the popular drive-way- s for the automobilist and tourist the country ovct, while at the present time conditions in the canyon are anything but the best on the upper end of th road. The Utah County commissioners, however, must be given credit for having done about double the work done by the Wasatch people, but still there are rock beds along the line that need attention without delay, if the , canyon is to become popular this summer. ? This same proposition holds true in all parts of the county, and just as rapidly as possible the people should get in line to help the commissioners build roads that will be a credit to the valley. As the movement of good roads is spreading we recall a poem Written upon the good roads situation whieh has a. great deal of truth in it, and is as follows: Y like Caesar Did '1 When Caesar took an eastward ride and grabbed the Gauls of Rome, What.wasthe first thing that he did to make them feel at hornet Did he increase the peoples loads and liberty forbid t No, he dug inland built good roads. Thats what old Caesar did. s. ' Did old Caesar put the iron heel upon the foemans breast, Or did he try to make them feel that Roman rule was best? What did he do to make them glad he came their midst amid! lie built good roads in place of bad thats what old Caesar did. He built good roads from hill to hill, good roads from vale to vale He ran a good roads movement until old Rome got all the kale. He told the folks to buy a home, build roads their hills amid, DON f THE OLD GUARD. 2J0 Three months year that's what old Caesar did. all roads led up to Rouse 7 discussing the situation at Chi- eago seems to see in the old guard a significance. of more than usual interest at the present time, and especially the old guard which took part iii the convention held at Chicago last week. That paper states: . If there had been a sufficient amount of choloform on hand, and Dr, Osiers theory could have been accepted, the colonel might Jiave won a sweeping victory at Chicago. We find, on reading the roster of the councils of war held in the tents of his opponents,- - many men who have passed Dr. Osiers 'limit, and many more who have passed the psalmists limit, sitting above the salt at the council boards. Stressful days and nights, with but small intermissions for eating and sleeping, midnight concusses lasting until daylight, swift emergencies calling for action no less swift, inevitable delay, the most trying of all experiences in vit al action,., meeting inflammatory , and .threatening protest with a resolute and unshaking front, and dealing, at short range and in short space, with all of the thousand ills that flesh is heir to when it fills the high seats itfa partys councils called to choose men and measures for a coming campaign, found them and left them, a score or more of them, strong and resourceful and apparently as able as the youngest delegate in the Coliseum to carry the struggle over into the next week. ' If Senator Root, who presided so ably and impartially that even third-terthe men, finding fault with nearly everything, have not been able to find fault with his rulings, had been choloformed at the expiration of the doctors time limit, a younger man with a less seasoned head could easily have invited a wreck. As it is, the cause triumphant in his selection as temporary chairman is triumphant to the total result of the conventions work, with the one most dissenting figure seemingly up in the air, unable to concentrate his scattered forces at any point of action, and wholly unresolved as to what course he himself shall take. And the presiding officer was but a type of many men, to be found in many delegations, or of such high rank in party counsel as to be called into conference, whose intelligent and courageous work broke the force .of the strongest wave against party and patriotic tradition which ever threatened to overwhelm a party in our politics. Their physical and mental vitality met every test. But even more valuable, in such an emergency, was their accumulated experience of years of active participation in public life. -- Experience gained and lost is the most empty thing under the heavens. It is as the thing that never was. ; It is but the dreanfof yesterday. But the experience of a long life which falls upon a strong and active mind, capable of grasping it in completeness, holding it and turning it into the wisdom, of a. larger equipment for future struggle that is the wisdom of the ages. v if K C Baling Powder works like magic.
