One of our exchanges gives a brief summary of a "few of the many tragedies in the United States during the year 1911 which have been tabulated and deserve the careful consideration-- of the Professor Starr once remarked that Americans are not the most kPPy of people. Habitual street loafers are generally in a class by themselves. T into crime. develop Cigarette smoking and the use of tobacco by minors is a habii ts that developed --while loafin g and'Provo has a good many young men who are' rapidly becoming addicted to the habit, and should be watched carefully by the probation officer ant the police department. It is a hard matter to catch the boys in the act of smoking as it is usually done on the sly, but there are some eases that should be handled in such a manner as to set an example who are violating the law., Boys who are found loafing the streets continua lly are seldom fit for anything else, as they become lazy and cannot be depended upon. These agencies include 618 associations and sanatoria, hospitals and eapaps; 365 dispensaries and clinics; and 91 open air schools. If to these were added 200 state and local boards of health and a number of other institutions, such as hospitals for the insane and lenal institutions making special provision for tuberculosis cases, the total number of agencies engaged in tuberculosis work would be swelled to nearly 2,000. During the year 1911 the greatest percentage of increase among the different forms of tuberculosis work was among Tthe open air schools for anaemic and tuberculosis children.' On January, 1, 1911, there were only 29open air schools in operation oF'provided for in the entire Country. On January!' 1912, there werejl, an increase of 214 per cent. Sixty-tw- o newschools have been established or provided for this past year. This entire number of open air schools have been established since January 1, 1907.
