Show FURNACE BY SUN worshipers inhuman parents keep son a prisoner ao 50 yard every afternoon for three years weighted with ball and chain chicago charged with confining his ten year old son at the end of a nine foot ball and chain in a sun beaten courtyard in order that the boy might eventually prove an accept ab e sacrifice to the sun god he worships james boesrup of west forty seventh street vas arrested by capt clancy of the stock yards station according to the story capt clancy by the boy every afternoon he WO attached to a ball and chain and cruelly beaten tor the last three 01 four years on his from school he has been taken to a stockade in the rear of his home and there locked up oace in the stockade the little fellow has been at cached by the waist to a heavy chain at the end of which is a 60 pound ball and from early in the afternoon until sundown he has been compelled to remain in captivity once he ran away from his parents but was recaptured and given extra imprisonment and several severe thrashings as a result of his desobe diance the stockade ade in the rear of the boesrup home is surrounded by a fence about 16 feet in height it Is barren of any movable object and the ground Is covered with gravel in one corner is a small outhouse rooted with tar and gravel it Is so arranged that the afternoon sun may blaze down upon it in addition to the natural difficulties of scaling a wall 16 feet in height the boy has never been allowed to roam at liberty within the stockade to his waist aas been fastened the middle of a chain made of heavy cast iron the ends of which are fastened to a ball weighing 55 or 60 pounds the attention of the police was called to the treatment ot the boy by those living in the neighborhood who told capt clancy that the cries ot the child could be heard in the adjoining houses although on account ot the high wall it was impossible to see what was being done with him mamie ryan a next door neighbor told the officers that on one ot the hottest days this summer her curios ity prompted her to look through a chink in the wall she saw the little boy lying alpar antly overcome by the heat on the top ot the outhouse the ball and chain were attached to his waist and for more than halt an hour be lay without shifting his position then his father came from the house with a pail of water in his hand he threw the contents over the pros boy and without waiting to see whether he recovered or not returned to the house the police have learned that in addition to using the stockade tor the purpose of inflicting punishment on his son boesrup each week conducted services within its walls on sunday mornings and at other times the tarn lly would be brought out and boesrup mounting a soap box would explain the tenets of his faith during these dissertations his con gre gation consisted of his son his daughter and his wife all of whom were compelled to kneel on the ground while the service was in progress mrs boesrup and the daughter helen 17 years old would not tell the police the nature of these services the boy Is too young to understand the full import ot the incantations ut by his father but stated to capt clancy that frequent reference was made to the sun and that his father on many occasions talked with the greatest reverence of the power of he sun we would all go out in the back yard on sunday mornings said the boy to capt clancey and father would get up on a soap box the rest of us would kneel nn the gravel it was very hot but not so bad as in the afternoons when J would be in there alone father would talk a lot about the sun and how it gave us light and ufa and a lot of other things but I 1 coulden couldn t understand inder stand it all he always looked it the sun when he was praying |
