Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL 25, 2001 Sports Panguitch Track Meet By Karen Kelly Panguitch High School hosted their first qualify meet on their new track. Everything was perfect, except the weather. When they released the balloons as part of their dedication ceremony, the sky responded with snowflakes. What started out as flurries quickly turned ugly. The track apparel soon resembled Eskimo survival clothing and needless to say not many records were broken. Kelly Brown qualified for the 110 meter hurdle finals, a good accomplishment for this freshman. He is gaining valuable experience that will eventually x pay off. Asa Judd finished 8th in the 800 and Toby Roundy 11th. Toby also ran the 400, placing 12th. In the high jump Mace Glazier took 5th and he also got the 4th place medal in the long jump. Ricky Thomas added a couple of medals with a 4th in the discus and a 5th in the shot put. The mens 4 x 100 relay was put together under protest. Running for the first time as a group were Mace Glazier, Kelly Brown, Robert Hansen and Kyle Brunner. They placed third, despite some scary looking hand-offWay to go guys! J ulie Arbogast qualified for the 400 finals with a seventh place time and looked forward to going for a medal in the finals. By s. afternoon the snow canceled the events and medals were issued by trials times. Hard to run when you cant see the lanes. Charlene Miles was barely nipped at the line to lose the 6th place medal in the 800 Tasha Larsen had a hard time holding on to a wet discus, but managed to bring home a 5th place medal. She qualified for the shot finals, but did not place. Sam Hamblin has accepted her coaches challenge to consider preparing for the BYU heptathlon so she gave the 100M hurdles a try. She made the finals with the third best time, but by afternoon she lboked like the abominable snowman in all her layers and got the 6th place medal. Not bad for three days of practice. She won the high jump competition onto wet mats and took 3rd in the long jump. Congratulations to all those tracksters who braved the elements and now have something special to tell their grandchildren some day. By improving your gardening techniques, you can address the core problem, as opposed to treating the symptoms with pesticides and per- petuating the environmental conditions that encourage pest infestation. Using pesticides too frequently can actually exacerbate the problem by killing the beneficial insects that prey on pests, and cause pests to develop immunities to pesticides. Even when you do use a pesticide to treat a severe problem, it is wise to use techniques, such as improving the soil, moving the plant to a healthier location, or watering more effectively. At this time I would like to thank all of my faithful fans for reading another excellent portion of Plant Time. Believe you me, I will see you next week with I another exciting, exhilarating piece of literature. |
