I wont bore you with the details of how absolutely-gorgeou- s she is, and how shes obviously going to be the next Einstein.. .but I did learn one thing from being around ina wonder fants once again-it- s our kids ever made it! Everything we did to them, somebody has proven wrong! Did you know youre not supposed to lay babies on their stomachs anymore? Doctors say theyre safer sleeping on their backs. But theyll probably change their minds again next year. Parents should just turn their wee ones like on a spit during the night, so theyre bound to get it right occasion- arent supposed to give a baby cereal until theyre like you 30 or something? I was a firm believer that babies were more content and cried less if their stomach was full. The doctor did tell me that I was a little premature with solids, when I tried to feeding oatmeal to our crying son in the delivery room. The carseats take the cake, they have evolved more than any other baby device. Theyre can turn into a amazing-the- y carrier or a stroller in seconds. ..or so they say. But you have to get your children to trust you with them first. Mom, lets go out to the car and see if you know how to put the carseat in correctly, my son said authoritatively before leaving the baby with me. ally. And whats the deal with the This may surprise you enYou need carriers? an baby honey ,I replied, but carseats to gineering degree just figure had already been invented by them out! Talk about compli- - the time you guys were born. U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon that you are never supposed to give honey to a baby? I gave our four sons so much, queen bees consider them home." participated in a hearing recently to ensure public access to our National Parks. There are eight units managed by the National Park Service in the 3rd Congressional District. These parks are governed by a host of regulations that determine which uses are appropriate. Recently, the Park Service has taken action to limit visitation opportunities, such as restricting scenic overflights and the use of personal water craft and snowmobiles. Although this is a national issue, Utah has several examples of the impacts of this regulation. The Superintendent of Lake Powell, Joe Alston, has done an excellent job of balancing access and enjoy ment with resource preserva- tion, Cannon said. On the other side of this dilemma, however, we have the National Park Service scheduled to close roads under an administrative, planning process along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, eliminating snowmobile use in a number of Utah parks, including Dinosaur, Zion and Cedar Breaks, and attempting to ban motors and heavily restrict the number of trips on the Colorado River. The economic impacts of snowmobile use and other recreation in our National Parks was addressed in the hearing. Since we want to be able to preserve our public lands, the livelihoods of the people who live around them are of critical concern. Outfitters, fishing guides, air tour operators, and concessionaires all provide important sources of employment. These jobs give the local population a stake in the continued conservation of our National Parks for future generations, Cannon said. With appropriate access, National Parks can serve a valuable purpose in both conserving land and educating the public about a range of natural processes, Cannon said.
