Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Sports adies Golf Lynx win big over Life School, 44-- 0 The Coral Cliffs Ladies Golf Association have had a fun and busy schedule. On August 25 they finished a Two Week Ringer By Kent Mason Stirlandwinningthe event. The Franklin, Sally Quinn, and Yvonne Stirland. September 8 was a Red and White Tournament. This was won by Cathy Terell, who also took the days draw. September 15 the second Guys and Dolls eighteen hole scramble for this year was held. Results as follows: First place gross: Jean Glazier and Alan Daly; Second place gross: Cathy Terell and Deor Perkins; First place net: Jean and Jerry Beck; Second place net: Margaret Excell and Kelly Johnson; Closest to the hole on 2: Ladel Alvey; and Closest to the hole on 6: Cathy Terell. The Fredonia Lynx are in a rut. Their last two games have both ended by the same 44-score. At least its a good rut, theyve won them both. In a game where the heat was almost as much of an enemy as the opposing team, the Lynx won another but far from easy, victory. The game started at 10 a.m. to avoid the heat. It didnt work. The temperature one hour before gametime was 89. When the game ended, it was over 100. The Bengals received the opening kickoff and after a return, the ball was in play on their own 35 yard line. On the first play froimscrimmage, Tyrel Sanders and Jerry Johnson combined on the tackle for a three yard loss. A run for two yards brought up a second and eight. Scott Colson cut threw the line and tackled the ball carrier in the backfield for a five yard loss. Then Jerry Johnson did the same for a six yard loss and the Bengals found themselves with a fourth down and 21. A good punt put Fredonia all the way down to their own five yard line. After a Clint McCormick run for five yards, a pass attempt from Tyrel Sanders to Josiah Nash fell incomplete. After a fumble on the snap, the Lynx punted the ball on fourth down. It sailed down to the 36 yard line. After a Bengal run for no gain, Zach Tait sacked the quarterback for a five yard loss. On the next play the Bengal quarterback pitched the ball to the fullback who was hit and dropped by Zach. The punt was returned by Josiah Nash, who weaved his way into the end zone for a touchdown. A pass attempt on the conversion try fell in 0 Tournament, with Yvonne days draw was a tie between Charlotte Barnson and Cristy Carlson. September 1, a Low Gross and Low Net play was held. A flight of winners were: Yvonne Stirland, low gross and Di Franklin, low net. B flight winners were: Ginny Bonnard, low gross and Betty Pardee, low net. The days draw went to Di one-side- V Scott Johnson Team ca d, rd Johnson named to the 1999 Academic All-Ameri- National High School Coaches Association named Kohler Scott Johnson of Kanab High School to the 1999 Academic Wrestling Team. The 35 members of the 1999 class were selected based on a combination of grade point average, class rank, test scores, All-Ameri- ca other academic honors, and wrestling accomplishments. Of the 35 member team, 18 were state champions, six include state ing Scott, were two-tim- champions, three including Scott, were three-tim- e state winners. The team average GPA was 3.72 with Scott checking in at 3.93. The winners come from 14 states this year. Utah was the leading state with eight of the 35. The try went to McCormick again, and again the Lynx scored to put Fredonia up 14-two-poi- nt 0. Soon after the kickoff, Life School found themselves looking at a fourth down and six from midfield. The gamble on fourth down fell short, giving the Lynx the ball at the 40. A Josiah Nash run for three yards was followed by a 42 yard touchdown run by Nash. A pass on the two-poi- nt conversion was picked off, and Fredonia led 20-- 0. After a short Bengal series, Fredonia received the ball on Life Schools 37 yard line. A 22 yard pass from Tjrel Sanders to Jerry Johnson put the Lynx on the board again. The try was no good, giving Fredonia a 26-- 0 lead. The Lynx picked up six points in the third period to go up 32-Then they added 12 more in the fourth to end the game early via the 42 point mercy rule. Leading defensively for the Lynx wasZach Tait with 13 tackles, including five for losses. On offense, Josiah Nash carried the ball 10 times for 111 yards and two-poi- nt 0. four Clint toucdowns. McCormick also had a good game on the ground with a touchdown. Valley baseball on their way to State By Ebbony Eberly Six consecutive wins for Valley leave them with the rights for state. On September 3, Valley tromped the Escalante Moquis. In the first inning, Marvin Hoyt helped give Valley an early lead with a home run over the centerfield fence. Jerry Glover, Michael Frost, Joseph Sorensen and Ike Spencer showed their batting skills by each adding a double, helping to bring the final score to 12-2. With the Buffaloes fired up from their previous win, nothing could hold them back against Escalante. The first inning ended up with a seven run lead, In the second inning, Marvin Hoyt cracked two home runs. Daniel Roundy and Michael Frost both added doubles, with the rest of the team showing off their offensive skills by adding 1 1 more runs to the score. Valley held Escalante to only one run with a whopping win, 23-Bryce Valley traveled to Valley on September 10 to take on the Buffaloes. The Mustangs remained scoreless with Valley using their defense skills to hold them back. Jerry Glover belted a triple with Ike Spencer and Charlie Crosby each batting doubles helping to rap the game up quickly with a 10-- 0 score. Game two against Bryce Valley proved to be another success for the 3uffaloes. Marvin Hoyt hit a homer over the left field fence. Valley came away winning, The clouds were dark, threatening rain on September 17, as Valley took on the Wayne Badgers; the games that would determine who would go to state. With Wayne ahead after the first inning, the Buffaloes had to fight back hard retaliating with good defense and offense in the second inning putting Valley up by one.
