Though the term Founding F athers conjures up images of a group of older men, most of the a Founding Fathers were rela tively young men. Despite the presence of Benjamin Franklin, who was 81, the average age of the signers was just 43 years old. James Madison, Father of the Constitution, was only 36 years old, while the articulate Alexander Hamilton was an even more youthful 31. The youngest delegate was Jonathan Dayton from New Jersey, who was only 26 years old. The delegates to the convention as a group were very well educated. Thirty-on- e attended college; 15 graduated. .Three were college professors and two college presidents. Six attended universities in England All of this education aided the delegates in creating a new government.
