Show v News SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY JULY 29, 1998 Coal Report The Department of Natural Resources Office of Energy and Resource Planning has released the 1996 Annual Review and Forecast of Utah Coal Production and Distribution. The publication, which was prepared by the Office of Energy and Re- source Plannings Senior Energy Specialist F.R. Jahanbani, highlights recent developments in Mwm ciaiaESiatittDsiaiiiicnMiO Utahs coal industry. Utah and the United States set new coal production records in 1996. Utah produced a record 27.1 million tons of coal, representing the third consecutive year in which Utahs mines set a new production record. Utahs 8.1 percent production increase also represented the largest increase in the West that year. Utah mines delivered 27.8 million tons of coal in 1996, exceeding 1995s record year by 0EIIi3i0M(MIIJGB 2.4 million tons, reported Jahanbani. Exports to Pacific KEY. Rim countries, which increased by 1.7 million tons, and increased consumption of Utah coal by out-of-sta- te electric utilities were largely responsible for the increased deliveries. Utah mines were the most productive underground mines . in the U.S. in 1996, said Jeff Burks, Director of the,Office of Engrgylarfd Resource Planning. Increaspd, mechanization of Utahs coal mines has enabled companies to produce twice the amount of coal with less than half the number of miners required just 10 years ago, Burks noted. High productivity, Utahs thick coal seams and favorable geology have also led to lower, more competitive coal prices for Utahs coal. During 1997, Utahs production and distribution is expected to exceed 28 million and 29 million tons, respectively, and set new records. amgaaamdegGJB J jf JfSfv neils I Fj A fci if . it it I 'i' ffjpM t Yi ; - ' Available on most rate plans . .
