Kanab & What if there are no jobs. We sing the blues that there are no large industries coming to Kanab, that the only jobs are minimum wage tourist related jobs. The county has been shown that its jail facility is antiquated and inadequate. It presents a liability to the county. At this point, since we have been notified, if we fail to fix the problems and they continue, then we are at risk of being charged with deliberate indifference, which compounds the problem. The Sheriff has attempted to address the issue. The State of Utah wants to purchase the building and build a new court house and provide office space for other state agencies. Land has been made available for donation. providing the county builds a new facility. Grants have been identified, a revenue bond has been investigated (the bank thought it was a good idea) and the State of Utah has committed to placing inmates. So with all this in mind the commission advertised and had a public meeting. The turn out was lackluster at best. The comc mission empowered an committee to study the issue. The chairman of that committee, rather than seriously investigating the issue and providing the county citizens with a solution based on objective discussion and problem solving, wrote a letter to the paper only listing his What ifs. He forgot a few What if s in his letter. What if the county built a jail that employed any where from ad-ho- What if those jobs were not minimum wage and provided good benefits. What if the jail provided a secure place to house inmates and was not a liability to the county as the current jail is. What if families of the inmates came to visit their loved ones and What if they stayed in Kanabs hotels and ate in Kanabs restaurants and filled their cars with Kanab gas... What if, as in Duchesne County the county enjoyed a $400,000 ayear profit, after paying for the new building and the new positions. if the county took that built its reserve and money funds, or built parks, libraries, museums and other educational and recreational facilities that we can only What if we had. The issue is serious and it can be complex, but something has What to be done. And if something must be done, then why not do something that will benefit the citizens and the county. All I know is What if a certain CPA was in charge of deciding if the Pilgrims took a chance and crossed the ocean to start a new life or stayed in England. Well...I think we would all be drinking tea and singing Hail to the Queen. Dan Watson Kanab Reminder: Our deadline is 5 p.m. Friday!
