Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS 3 WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 25, 1998 Kane Ranch By Lori S. Mohr Corrigan The Town of Fredonia and David Gelbaum, owner of Kane Ranch, jointly announce that Mr. Gelbaum has confirmed his decision not to donate the Kane Ranch to Grand Canyon Trust. The Town Council of Fredonia was delighted on learning last year that Mr. Gelbaum had purchased the Kane Ranch. The town officials felt that ownership by Mr. Gelbaum would insure that the traditional way of life of the area, namely that of the western cowboy, was going to be preserved for the citizens of the area. The Kane Ranch is by far the largest cattle ranch in the area, containing more than 600,000 acres of land, most of which are Forest Service and BLM leases. comThe ranch shares a mon boundary with the Grand Canyon National Park. Within the ranchs boundaries are contained most of House Rock Valley and the world famous Kaibab Plateaus wonderful, but fragile, landscapes. The Town of Fredonia was pleased to learn of the many changes during the past year that were undertaken on the Kane Ranch. One example is the tradeoff with the Forest Service to discontinue grazing in the sensitive Snake Gulch and Kanab Creek regions in exchange for substitute grazing in lush areas of the Kaibab Plateau. Recently the Fredonia Town Council learned with alarm that Mr. Gelbaum was discussingthe possibility of conveying the Kane Ranch to the Grand Canyon Trust, an environmental group. The mayor and council contacted Mr. Gelbaum and made known their disappointment that the historic Kane Ranch might no longer be under Mr. Gelbaums ownership and policies. More 5.9,, Nofees.
