Cecil Campbell is the Kanab City animal control officer. He is fair, treats people with respect, and cares about the animals that come into his charge. Mark Whips does the same job for Fredonia, and he does it very well and with much compassion. And Richard Negus, the Kane County humane officer, has extensive experience in animal welfare, as well as being a truly fine person. I know from personal experience what a difficult job it can be. Best Friends did the animal control job for several years dur- ing the 1980s, and during that time I was the local dog catcher, cat catcher and, on one occasion, the chicken catcher! My secret weapon, especially with difficult dogs, was to wear my doggiest-smellin- g clothes from here at the animal sanctuary. Once I had arrived at the scene of the crime, usually a dog biting a child or adult, I would just stand very still and wait for the dog to get a whiff of these doggie clothes. Id see that nose working overtime. Where is that incredible smell coming from? . . . it must be that lady standing over there . . . she must really mean I get to ride in her car with her? And off we would go to the sanctuary for the ten day rabies watch. One call I got from the Kanab City Police was about some chickens thatwereworkingtheir way through some ornamental gardens in the Ranchos after their owners had moved. I knew that the best time to catch them all was after they had gone to roost at night. Id tried chasing chickens during the day; the chicken always wins. Armed with several dog carriers we crept up on these guys in the evening, and within a few minutes we had nabbed them all. Cats were always a problem to catch. I once had to shut myself in a tool shed with a very un- happy stray Siamese who brought out all his armaments claws, teeth, and a very threatening hiss. After what seemed like hours, he letdown hisguard and I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, just like mama cats do, and got him into the cat carrier. Once I got him up to the sanctuary he was a perfect gentleman, and went on to find a great new home. (We all act a bit fierce when we are scared!) So much for reminiscences. If you find yourself needing the services of one of our animal control officers, I know youll be in good hands. Ifyou have lost a dog or cat, call the sheriffs dispatch at They keep a list of lost and found animals locally, and your pet will hopefully be on that list. -- 644-234- 9.
