Arizona claimed the lives of eleven hikers. Hikers at the canyons opening were alerted to the oncoming flash flood last Tuesday by a small trickle of water running down the sandy canyon floor. They yelled for hikers farther into the canyon to get out quickly, but no one heard or heeded their warnings. The roar of the deadly water surge came a few seconds later, sweeping the largely foreign hiking group down toward Lake Powell. Tour leader Poncho Quintane attempted to pull two of the tourists with him as he tried to wedge their bodies against the sandstone wall and hold on.
