J- - Board unanimously approved the 1997-9- 8 budget at its June 30 meeting. While no audience members were in attendance for the budget hearing, the board members asked many questions of new superintendent Bob Johnson. Johnson said that there would be less state revenue to work with considering the 1451 anticipated district enrollment figure. He said that his only real trepidation about the budget was that there would only be $67,000 left in the undistributed reserve. (Money to be used in a district emergency.) Johnson said he hopes the teachers union will work amicably with them, especially since the built-i- n teacher raise was cutting the districts contingency fund so low. In order to give teachers the 3 raise, commented Johnson, we have cut down to bare bones. But he told the board that he felt strongly about the raise being included in the bud plish what we want to in our schools, were goingto need their help and were going to need to do it together. Other budget issues discussed by the board were: Future career ladder ideas. How to address the $49,000 shortfall in the school lunch program. The high cost of having substitute teachers. The board felt that this cost would be reduced dramatically this year due to the athletic conference realignment The possibility of sharing library space with the city. A UHSAA survey was completed by the board with thoughtful discussion of athletic compe- tition issues.
