Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS TUESDAY DECEMBER 24, 1996 Opinion 4 Dd3E Speaks There was a timber sale at the U.S. Forest Service office in Fredonia last week. This event bears mentioning, simply because it doesn't happen anymore. About three years ago, the conflict had reached an impasse between environmental groups and lumber companies (along with dependent local communities) over the North Kaibab trees. The U.S. Forest Service was caught in the middle. After months of timber health research, and complying with a myriad of sale regulations, after preserving any endangered or threatened species habitat (or potential habitat), the F.S. would offer the timber out to lumber company bid. The Forest Service used the lumber companies as a forest management tool. The agency had complete control of this working resource, and not a single tree could be cut, unless they first approved it. It soon became apparent that all timber sales would be appealed by some environmental group, tying the transaction up in court. The cost of sale preparation and litigation involved in defending their position, eventually made the sales uneconomical for the Forest Service. Economics also took a toll on the lumber companies, with little product to work with, they weren't able to employ workers or make money. Last summer7 s lightning fire consumed 53,000 acres of the beautiful North Kaibab. The Forest Service prepared the sale of the salvage timber. Last week, after much protesting by environmental groups, the sale was cleared by court and proceeded. It's ironic that a fire is the only way that people can get an opportunity to harvest a completely renewable resource, but life is opening their beautiful homes publicity, doing flyers and conkind of crazy these days.
