The Lynx traveled that road uphill every step of the way from the first practice in August, through September, October and into November to the pinnacle of the final acomplishment. And when the dust cleared over the Apache Junction High School football field Friday night, the Blue and White of Fredonia High 5 stood alone at the State a Champs-FredoniLynx 38, top-199- Mogollon Mustangs 32. For the first few minutes, the butterflies ruled. The Lynx received the opening kick-ofonly to fumble on the second play from scrimmage on their own 27 yard line. Mogollon was unable to pick up a first down on four plays and the Lynx got the ball back on their own 20. One play after a Jake Bundy carry of 14 yards, the Lynx fumbled again, f, with Mogollon recovering on the 27 yard line. Fredonia was unable to keep the potent Mustangs out of the end zone, as they scored on a pass play of 27 yards to get on the scoreboard first. The Lynx held on the conversion try and trailed 0 with 8:41 left in the first quarter. Was history about to repeat itself? In the Lynx loss to Mogollon earlier in the season, the Mustangs led 21-- 0 just five minutes into the game. Ice water in the veins replaced the butterflies in the stomach, as the Lynx marched down the field to score on a 14 yard touchdown pass from Nate Black to two-poi- 6-- nt U piraO Kerby Black. The TD was set up on an exciting 45 yard kickoff return by Billy Johnson. With 18 seconds left in the first period, Billy Johnson scampered 15 yards for a touchdown, only to have it called back on a penalty. Another penalty and a quarterback sack ended in a Lynx punt. After an exchange of punts, the Lynx mounted a drive from their own six yard line, culminating with Billy Johnson scoring from five yards out. N ate Black runs the keeper for another two points to put the Lynx up 16-- and thats the way the half ended. The Mustangs left their running game in the locker room at half-tim- e and came out throwing the ball, while the Lynx kept the ball on the ground and all but abandoned their passing game. Mogollon took the second half kick-of- f and quickly moved the ball deep into Lynx territory. The drive was stopped on a Kerby Black interception on the Fredonia four yard line. On the very next play, Jake Bundy broke loose for a 74 yard gallop, only to be caught on the Mustang one yard line. Nate Black scored a touchdown on a keeper conversion but the two-poicame up short to make the score 22-- 6 with 8: 13 left in the third.
