Show Community SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY AUGUST 16, 1895 Domestic Blitz By Dixie Brunner There used to be a recurring skit on the popular Saturday Night Live TV show called Tat. You never quite knew if Pat was a he or a she. The skit showed people reacting to Pat in a number of different life situations, such as work, grocery shopping or going to the post office. There was no clear way to tell whether Pat was a man or a woman, so people would try to trick herhim into revealing his sex. While the skit was a farce, the truth is that gender roles, customs and clothes are all being challenged of late. Androgyny is in. What used to be thought of as exclusively a man thing, or a woman thing, is suddenly all jumbled up. You can look at some people, andnot have acluewhether they are a him or a her, and quite often youre relatively sure that they might be an it. Personally, I think rock stars are to blame. (I can see my sons rolling their eyes at this point.) Some of these guys prance around the stage with more eye make-u- p than the Mississippi has mud. Earrings, which used to almost exclusively a womans accessory, are showing up on a lot of men. I guess theres benefits to that. If a couple both had pierced ears, perhaps they could cut down on costs and share accessories. But it might take some gettingused to by the older folks. If my dad had ever caught one of my brothers wearing earrings, they wouldve probably had to accompany him to the woodshed for a whipping! Women are also testing time-honor- ed traditions. With the feminist movement, and more women working outside the home, some answered the call by wearing mens suits and shoes. Both sexes have experimented with hairstyles through the years. Women have gone long and short with styles, with men doing the same. Ive suffered great embarrassment at this hairy aspect of the unisex thing. Ive tapped a person on the shoulder to ask a question. Mam, could you please tell me where the lightbulbs long-haire- are? d Its humbling when they turn around, and have a mustache and full beard! There are ways to trick people into revealing their gender. I compiled the following list to help clear the confusion. Rest assured its a woman if: You drive past a mall and their heart rate goes up.
