Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 30. 1994 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks Comp time has become a hot topic around the Sheriff s department as of late. There have been charges of some abuses within the department. Comp time is time billed to the county by a certain classification of employee, above and beyond their normal working salary. For instance, if a deputy is asked to transport a prisoner to Salt Lake, he is compensated by the county for time spent on the trip. It wouldnt be in the countys best interest to have that officer make the trip during his patrol hours, leaving the county inadequately protected. There are numerous legitimate reasons for comp time. But what about abuses? Does it make sense to have a deputy drive down to St. George or Las Vegas to get a part for a vehicle or computer, while you and I are paying for it? UPS and Federal Express might be a cheaper option. I dont think anyone objects to legitimate comp time. We appreciate our law enforcement, and want them to get compensation for time spent above and beyond their normal duties. Bu lets get a handle on it. County taxpayers do not want to be footing the bill for sidetrips to Vegas. Perhaps the best way to address comp time abuses, is to have the issue better defined in county policy. You could follow up on the issue by making certain that someone within the department is keeping an eye on policy adherence. We encourage the new Kane County Commission to make the comp time issue a priority. would like to assure the citiIt seems strange to me that if zens of Kane County that Kane a person tries to better themCounty Sheriffs deputies are selves by going to school, or beprofessional law enforcement ing involved in community officers who will support the in- projects, that it is viewed as necoming sheriff and continue to glecting their families. They are just two human beings. Ive not ever read in the Bible that men and women are to refrain from speaking to each other. In fact, Christ had many female friends, and no one gossiped about them. Each day we should seek to look for the good qualities that we all have to offer each other. Encourage your friends to be positive. But, its a hard town to be an adult in. I know this is supposed to be areligious town, but it is extremely hard to recognize that fact. There are countless women in this town who think they are the appointed judge and jury. If you dont do things the way they think you should, it is bad, very, very, bad. You are then rewarded with blank stares, speculation, or just downright rudeness. Christ said to Love one another as I have loved you. Jesus himself was understanding of others weak- nesses, he chose to love them instead of alienating them. He did not say that a prerequisite was perfection in all things. We all have our own weaknesses, which are different from anyone else. They are as unique as our own fingerprints. Why do the women in Kanab think that they are so perfect that they can pass judgment on others? Is it the need to find the imperfections in others to justify their own Marcie mmm The Southern Utah News (ISSN No. is published every ) Wednesday at 26 N.
