Totally missing his point, I told him his notion was crazy, and that I hadn't met anyone in Kanab who had difficulty expressing hisher opinion! "No Dixie, you don't understand. I mean that you can't have an opinion tha.t'sdifferent from the majority mindset. They don' t necessarily respect you for your right to think differently, they deem you a radical and outcast." I was beginning to understand. His line of thinking was that you can't disagree with the popular opinion on issues here, and if you do, you get the community cold shoulder. I'm not referring to religion here. I'm talking about community problems, political thinking, etc. You may think the gentleman's complaint is sour grapes, and dismiss it. But quite frankly, the more that I've talked with people, I think he may be right. When we close our minds to other peoples input and views, we may be making a dreadful mistake. When we continually dismiss other peoples' ideas because they are unlike our own, we risk the chance of shutting off innovative new approaches, insight and solutions to difficult issues. At one time, majority opinion said the world was flat. Along came a guy named Christopher Columbus and proved it otherwise. People thought he was crazy at first. He had an opinion that was different than the majority. The United States is a success because different people with different backgrounds, beliefs and ideals, have been willing to work together. They haven't always agreed on often disagreed. things. Quite the opposite is true-the-y But in the democratic process, with its give and take of ideas, we glean out truly good answers to the challenges that face us as a nation. Allow people to have and express different opinions in Kanab. Welcome their new ideas. Who knows, with an open mind, we might just be able to make a better mousetrap. I am writing to ask you to publish my letter in your local newspaper in hopes that I might receive a response from your readers. I am interested in learning all there is to know about Kanab. I know I can learn a lot from books, but I think to hear it from the people is the best kind of learning. Any letters with stories, experiences, feelings, etc. would be very helpful. Id like to hear about when people first moved to Kanab. I would also like to hear from some who were born in your town. Children could explain to me what it is like to live there, and what they do in school for fun, chores and on holidays. I would appreciate it if people in Kanab would help me experience a typical day, month, season or year. By printing this letter I hope to receive information about Kanab and Utah to help complete my report And who knows , I might be lucky enough to make a few friends!
