Show Feature History-Makin- g William Claytons original odometer was bro-making ken near Fort Laramie, Wyoming, during the Mormon pioneer trek, according to Claytons diary. On August 7, 1847, in the Salt Lake Valley, William King fixed it, altering the odometer so it would record a thousand miles distance without being reset. Clayton used the repaired, altered instrument to remeasure the pioneer route during his return trip to Winter Quarters in the fall of 1847. It then disappeared from history. This quality craftsman works out of his home. He first draws a design and faxes it to the company for approval. Scanland then makes the original sculpture and sends it off to the company for casting. He uses what ever material it takes, epoxy, clay, wood, to make the original. His sculptures are unique and wonderful. Scanland has done hundreds of designs. A few of his designs have been castles, cottages, lighthouses, farms, chess set, wizards, sorceress, and clowns. A normal work day for him is nine or ten hours. Scanlands work is so good that he will have work as long as he can work. The artist said there was an article about him and his miniature sculptures in the Washington Post. There even was a picture. And I didnt even talk to a reporter. he said with a mischievous grin. This talented man still likes to paint, but says many people wind-u- p compromising to make a living. Thats just the way it is, he said. The couple thinks someday they may open a shop in Kanab. Scanland said he could do some paintings and sculptures related to the area. I could do the original art work and Danielle could do the casting. Its a possibility, he said. Scanland takes photos and is going to set up a dark room. Recently, he helped the Kanab High School Drama class out by doing the back drop for West Side Story. This man has a million and one hobbies and can do anything, his wife said. The Scanlands are glad they moved to Kanab. They like the friendly atmosphere.
