Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Community FjnHA extends loans to community projects LDS Bookshelf By Lydia Johnson fleet what may be .common experience and then delve into, Linda Sillitoe has a new collection of short stories out entitled Windows on the Sea the irrationalities and co-auth- Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders. She also won the Association of Mormon Letters Best Novel Award 1987-8- 8 for her work, Sideways to the Sun. Because of these notable ' achievements, this new book has been widely anticipated and is now available to the public. Sillitoe has a very perceptive, sensitive style. She focuses on the isolation of our human experience, as well as the mighty influence we have on one another. These stories raise more questions than they provide answers, but they are questions we all need to face. The characters are hauntingly human and the emotions. are intensely personal. It is quite unusual to find such powerful insight in Mormon literature; Sillitoe is not afraid to confront some of, the universal issues related to our faith and the challenges of life. Because of thjs unusual honesty, Che stories may make you uncomfortable, indeed many of them are hard to'forf get. Hut this discomfort comes from the authors ability to re- - para- that emerge! As we see ourselves in the various characters, we are' slowly 'swept toward a different perspective of our own lives. A few of the stories are, inmy estimation, destinpdto become classics" in Mormon literature. Others are not a complete or refined. I becaiye q little tired of Sillitoes ovefworked symbolism in a fewof the stories; it seemed she relied too heavily on dreams to conveythe subconscious. But that occurs only two or three times (unfortunately, they appear cc 'secu-tivel- y in the book). There is a rare hint of sensuality that seems to instill life into the characters Imd stories, but for this reason I would recorftmend the Hook for mature readers. AlHn all, f found this to be a profound - iDS collection. Its power is in its ability to explore our, human reactions to the issues of compassion, conformity, commandment and confrontation.
