How many tourists, coming in a rented RV from I .as Vegas, will be encouraged to spend $10 round trip for the privilege of passing through a tunnel to v.e the rest of Kane County? And how many winter touruts will he willing to wait 43 hours for the privilege? Perhaps I have missed all the reports cm the numerous accidents m the tunnel. There is no rational argument for giving special treatment to an elite group of Utah government employees as if they were more deserving of a tax break than other taxpayers, according to die tax watchdog group. The Utah Taxpayers Association calls on the Legislature to tax die retirement income of state and local retirees, just as diey do federal retirees and private sector retirees. The request come in die wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that Michigan's in crime tax on federal retirement benefits violates federal law because Michigan exempts the retirement of state employees from the state income tax, as dries Utah, The Court said Michigan mast give die exemption to federal retirees, or begin to tax state retirees like everyone tlx. Utah exempts retirement benefits of 15,000 state and local retirees but not federal or private sector retirees. Utah's law was modified last year to take die exemption away from new state and local workers. However, the approximately 80,000 state arid local employees who are already employed will still have their retirement incomes exempt from state income taxes when they retire. The government employees eligible for the special treatment comprise 13 of Utah employment. The Utah exemption is offensive to taxpayers because nearly all of the the contributions to the retirement fund are piaid by taxpayers, not state employees. The specal treatment exemption is alvi painful to die hundreds of diousands of private sector workers who have small retirement programs or none at all. LS Most Americans know that George Washington threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River, and his wooden teeth still rank as the most famous set of dentures in history. Who could forget how as a child he chopped down a cherry tree' with his little hatchet, and then owned up to his dastardly deed by refusing to tell his father a lie? Generation after generation of school children have grown up with these stories about our first president For millions of Americans, these and other remarkable tales about George Washington are truer than the red, white and blue, and more American than apple pie. Since they have existed for years, the stones must be true, right? W'rong! At times it seems that the "Father of Our Country" is the subject of more myths than a Greek god. To set the record straight, scholars at Mount Vernon have examined the most popular myths about George Washington, and revealed the real truth behind the legends of our childhood. MYTH: As a boy, George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and, when asked about the tree by his father, he confessed, saying: "I cannot tell a lie." FACT: Sure, there were cherry trees at Mount Vernon, and George Washington even chopped down some of them. But the tale about his childhood honesty is only a legend, originaung in the imagination of Mason Weems, an early biographer of Washington. Since so bale is known about Washington's childhood, Weems invented several anecdotes about Washington's early life to illustrate the origins of the heroic qualities Washington exhibited as an adult. Introduced to countless school children as a moral tale in the McGuffey Reader textbook, the parable has become a persistent part of American mythology. Color Country Travel Council Helps Visitors - Over 1,000, 000 ST. GEORGE potenual visitors have been exposed to Color Country through travel shows this past winter. Alma Truman, executive secre- tary of the Color Country Travel Council, who recently returned from a travel and recreation show in San Mateo, Calif., said, "We are anticipating a good increase in visitors to the national parks and Color Country this year. The area is becoming more popular, and tourists are now talking about staying longer." Color Country participates with a booth in nine travel shows in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah during the first three months of the year. "Our purpose," Truman said, "is to promote tourism and increase the length of a tourists stay in Color Country. We pass out with brochures and talk thousands of potential visitors each year. What is really graufying is to have people come to the booth and tell us that because of the information we gave them last year, they stayed an extra week or two in one-on-o- ne Color Country. Attending a travel show is z cooperative effort. "It takes about 36 people from the five counties, and the travel council to man the booths. Over JXZ) man hours arc 1 expended and 80 percent of the time is donated, Truman said. Kane County ha been promoting tourism with Color Country at travel shows for 23 years. Jackie Rife, Kane County director of tourism, attended the San Diego and Phoenix shows m February and March. "The shows just keep getting bigger and better," Jackie said. "Our Kane County brochure is always one of the most popular because we are so centrally located in the middle of the national parks and close to Lake Powell. Travel shows give us the opportunity to promote all the other attractions in the county." Still to this day, it is one of the least understood of all psychoactive drugs. This is, no doubt, due to the fact that Marijuana has over 400 active chemicals in it, each having the capability of metabolizing in the human body into many other chemicals. In the thousands of years that marijuana has been used, it was only until fairly recently that the drug was made illegal. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 (which did not outlaw the drug, but taxed the buyers and sellers) led the way to making Marijuana illegal in the United States. Today, however, it still remains one of our most widely used illegal drugs. Unfortunately, amongst its users it is still believed to be a Cant Make Tax Deadline? One of the big concerns about Marijuana today is the increased potency of the drug compared to that of 25 years ago when Marijuana use became popular. Studies e, showed that the average joint (marijuana cigarette) contained about 1.25 THC (the main ingredient which gets the user high) in THC 1960 compared to 4 found in the average joint today. It can be especially harmful during pregnancy and cause birth defects. As with ANY psychoactive drug Marijuana is addictive. Withdrawal symptoms can be delayed as long as one to two weeks. Withdrawal symptoms include irritability, in- somnia, nervousness, hyperactivity, loss of appetite and most often an overwhelming desire to smoke the drug. The taxpayer must make a tax prepayment of 80 percent of the estimated tax liability or 100 percent of the 1987 taxes paid. 3) There are serious penalties for taxpayers who do not file or pay their taxes.
