Throughout the State of Utah many big game winter ranges are producing less available winter forage for deer and elk because of invading pinyon and juniper trees. Many big game wintering areas were chained approximately twenty years ago, now those areas support an abundance of Christmas tree size trees. Removal of the pinyon invading pinyon and juniper tree allows the growth of browse species that the big game prefer. Thus, removal of invading trees improves the habitat. The Division of Wildlife Resources have scattered areas throughout the state where the public can harvest a Christmas tree, as does the US Forest Service and BLM. In Cedar City, Division of Wildlife Resources Supervisor Clair Jensen, is asking Christmas tree cutters who obtain a tree in the Summit area (land owned by the Division) to cut, stack, and leave two or three juniper trees. This practice not only allows additional space for new browse species but also provides habitat for many small mammals. Permits for the Christmas trees cost $3.00 and can be obtained from of Wildlife Division Resources Offices. Many areas like the Summit area north of Cedar City provide very easy access and are clearly marked. This step is important; a plant can die of wet soggy roots before it has a chance to establish itself. The best way to determine if a plant needs water is to dig down six inches at its base, pick up a handful of soil, squeeze the soil. It if forms a ball and stays together in your hand, watering is not necessary. only g Some local taxes may apply. Cttabhshad Plant the tree as soon as possible, either in a container or landscape. Extension Agent Transplanting trees and shrubs is an effective way to improve landscape. Best results are obtained when transplant shock is minimized through proper care. Transplant shock is used to describe poor growth, injury or even death of newly planted trees. The problem is most common with transplants that lose some or all root hairs in the digging process. This drastic reduction in water and nutrient absorbing capacity, and the resulting unbalance between roots and shoots, makes the plant vulnerable to many stresses. These stresses first show up during the first spring and summer as a yellowing of the needles or leaves followed by browning when the plant dies. The proper time to transplant the tree is during the dormant season November 1 through March 15, at 7,000 feet elevation. Select plants that are small, deciduous (aspen, birch, etc.) at five feet and under; evergreens (pine, cedar, etc.) at three feet and under. Pre-diyour planting hole to a size that will enable ample backfill. Select trees during drought period. These trees will be hardened off and less likely to show wilt. During digging, mark the north-sid- e of the tree, and during planting, place this side north. It is very important during the digging process that as many roots be taken as possible. Ball the roots up and wrap them to hold the soil on the roots. A tree three feet high may have a rootball 30 inches across and 24 inches deep. y Published in the Southern Utah News November 12, 19, 25 and December 3, 1987.
