Show V I e SOUTH ERri UTAH NEWS - Thursday, May 7, 1987 - Page Four Miss Kane County Contest Set Kane County girls ages 17 to 23 are reminded that the annual Miss Kane County contest will be held August 19, in connection with the Kane County Fair which will be held August 20, 21 and 22. Four scholarships will be given to contestants and the winner will be allowed to participate in the Miss Utah State Fair contest. Kristine Frost, chairman of the queen contest, is urging all girls to get in touch with her at She also said they are looking for businesses to sponsor the girls. Absent were Mchelle Terrel and Jeannette Banks torn Kanab Dr. Washburn Leaves Practice To Fill Church Position He's delivered babies, performed surgeries and administered to the sick since Page was just a shanty town for workers on the dam. And for some years in between then and now he also traveled to Kanab to do the same. In Page, particularly, he's delivered babies, watched them grow up and then delivered their babies. Now, after 28 years, Dr. J. Ballard Washburn will leave his medical practice on July 1. He and his wife Barbara will spend the next three years supervising young people serving missions in Northern Arizona for the LDS Church. We have been called by the LDS Church to supervise approximately 200 young people in the Scottsdale, Phoenix and Northern Arizona Washburn said in an area, interview last week with the Page newspaper. "Its an exciting opportunity. Were really looking forward to it. Washburn said he and his wife will live in Scottsdale while serving the church, but definitely plan to move back to Page when their work is over. He hasn't yet decided whether or not he will resume his medical practice when he returns to Page. They first moved to Page in 1959. When Page became a community, it was included in the Kanab Utah Stake so far as the LDS Church was concerned and in 1969 when Kanab resident Daniel S. Frost was released. Dr. Washburn was sustained as President of the Kanab Utah Stake. He served in that capacity for eight years, part of that being after Kanab Stake was divided and Page was made into a new stake. The Kanab Cancer Society held an area meeting on Wednesday, May 29, at the Richards Family Restaurant in Kanab. In attendance were Clyde Vance, local ACS President, Mildred Keller, Iris Masterson, Vicki Parker, Jan Ott and Zola Byrom. Special guests were Linda Unit 10 Supervisor; Susan Little and Lisa Starr. Par reports were discussed, also nominating of officers and committee for the coming year. The luncheon get together was a positive and informative meeting. Senior Center Week Celebrated May 10-1- 6 by Nedra Baughman To observe Senior Center week in Kanab, we are going to have open house Wednesday, May 13. We invite everyone to come to the Center and visit us, see some of the arts and crafts they have done; see our new outdoor patio. ' We are so very proud of our Center, there are a lot of changes since the Center was starting to be built in 1979 from an old cistern that was abandoned in 1935, to a beautiful center that it is now. Corry of Kanab, and Merlin Esplin, Damea M. Lamb, Delynn T. Lamb and Steve L. Hoyt of Orderville were named to SUSCs Dean's List for their outstanding quarter grades. Theres room for many more if you will come and join us. We go on trips. For instance, last Saturday, April 25, 22 seniors went to Tuweap and Mt. Trumble and had a picnic lunch. We were gone eight hours but it was interesting. We go shopping in Cedar, St. George or Page once in a while. This month we are going to Clear Creek is up to see some Indian Ruins-th- is by Richfield. Were also going to Paria and to Johnson Canyon to see Indian ruins at Judd's Ranch. Anyone interested just call 5250 for information. We deliver lunches to seniors who are not able to come to the Center for their lunch. Im sure there are people in our vicinity who could use this service. If they will just let us know. We will be glad to deliver a lunch Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Center is open week days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Every morning at 9 a.m. We do exercises; they are especially for senior citizens. They last all seniors are welcome. Art class is held every Monday, also chorus every Monday at 4 p.m. On Wednesday we have ceramics at 10 a.m. and crafts at 1 p.m. Blood pressure checks are made every Monday at 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. We nearly always have a quilt on. He will speak In Kanab 6th Ward sacrament meeting at 1 p.m., May 10. He Is the son of Dale and Patsy Clarkson of Kanab Weekly Transcript Courts Charley, Alfred, Jr., 29, of Kay-ent- a, Ariz., appeared before Kane County Justice of the Peace Dennis Mosdell Saturday. He was convicted of driving under the influence, driving with an open container of an alcoholic beverage in his vehicle and driving with an expired driver's license. Mosdell sentenced Charley to 60 days, 58 suspended, and fined him $845. Charley was also placed on three months probation. Hansink, Dale William, 37, of Cedar City, was convicted Monday of driving under the influence. He was sentenced to 60 days in the Kane County Jail and fined $600. PUN FOR THE DAY - A farmer had a bad accident and needed an operation immediately but there was no anesthetic on the farm. So the doctor caught a rabbit and held it in front of the farmers nose. The farmer passed out and the operation was a success. The rabbit was the Ether Bunny. They did say that the man was saved by a hare's breath. All you lovely mothers have a Happy Mothers Day. On May 13 we will have our barbecue in the new outdoor picnic area just completed. It will be at 12 noon. We hope there will be a big turnout and lots of thankful hearts for the men who built it for us. May 10 through 16 is Senior Center Week. We will have a special display at the center of arts and crafts. H you have paints or picture you have made, quilts, ceramics, crafts of any kind that can be displayed for our special day on May 13, please have them at the Center by May 11 or to Ellie Sanders as soon as possible. This will be open to the public and punch and cookies will be served. We hope lots of people will come see what we are doing and how we enjoy the center. May 9 there will be a trip to Clear Creek Canyon to see the Fremont Indians and petroglyphs and other points of interest. If you are interested in going, get your reservation into Nedra immediately. We will leave at 7 a.m. and the fare will be $8.00, May 14th will be a trip to Paria to see the old ghost town and cemetery, old movie ranch and homes. Bus will leave at 9 a.m., fare is $4.00. For those who knew Jennie Joseph, she has retired from y position and there will Funeral services for Donald Delmer Spencer (Duck), age 56, was held in the Glendale Ward Chapel Saturday, May 2, 1987, under the direction of Bishop Kevin Maxwell. Spencer died in Las Vegas,' NCV, April 25, 1987. Born in Cook County, Chicago, 111. Jan. 4, 1931 to Warren Delmer Spencer and Myrtle May King. He was the second son. His mother passed away when he was only two years old, and his father married Addie Pauline Whitsell from Sarah Mississippi in 1934. He attended school at the Glendale Grade School and at Valley High School. He married Jackie Hamblin of Kanab, Utah; one son was born to them. Donald was one of the best mechanics anywhere. He taught himself on jobs and through books. He took great pride in keeping trucks and cars in top shape and many people often asked him for advice. In 1968 he married Dolores Sampson Smeltzer, they have lived the past two years in Las Vegas, and Pahrump, Nev. He is survived by his widow, Dolores, his son, John Spencer, Fredonia, Arizona; and stepsons Bradney Verner and Randy Smeltzer, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; mother, Addie Spencer, Glendale; brother, Brant Spencer, Henderson, Nev.; sisters Mera Hoyt, Orderville, and Betty Spencer, St. George; brother, William David (Bill) Spencer, Glendale, five grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces who love him very much. Rowley graduated from Air Force Basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During the six weeks of training Rovy ley, pjudied the Air Force mission, organization and customs in and ..received special human relations. In addition to the course, Rowley will earn credits toward an associate degree through the community college of the Air Force.
